  1. i think that birds need less protein now as we have the new fat/energy mixs, a mix like vl superstar is fine to use with around 10 % energy mix added rather than maples etc the birds digest this protein a lot quicker plus they will need the extra fat if raced over 250 miles regularly as once the carbs are burnt they will need the fat to fly on or they start wearing down there on body muscle , peas/beans do not carry the fat that sunflower etc does,,,, a top flier i know (national winner) told me just use gerry mix and over 200 add 10-20% energy mix, no break or re building needed on this mix plus you have the fat in the bird for when they need to call on the reserves, if you a sprinting to 200 you dont need the energy mix

    why maize

so from the post above its more to the sugar and fat with maize that wins out over barley, dari etc but would energy mix sunflower, rape, hemp, peanuts etc added to a light mix at say 10-30% not have the same result as maize this way the birds would not get to fat early season,
  3. i think the feeding method in the book may be alittle out of date

    why maize

why do most widowhood mixtures contain such a high % of maize, and not dari, rice, barley many mixtures seem to have 50-60% of maize yet the carbohydrates in maize are not much more than the other grains mentioned , is it for the higher fat content that maize has? could a no maize high carb mix work with the addition of fats seeds as the distance increases, any advice of thoughts on the high use of maize would be good to read, could a light diet mix (barley, wheat, rice dari, with say 30-50% energy plus be used in the mix from wednesday onwards work the same as maize, then that way fat would only be added when required , some peas could be added on sunday and monday after a hard fly to increase the protein

  9. i use them more in the first feed of the day so they break down quicker and digest easy for the baies in the nest
  10. 50% barley, 10% chicken pellets, 20% wheat.20% tics works out £6.75 and thr dropping are perfect 1oz per day after feeding they get a hanful of hormoform, rape seed, rice between 30 birds,

    Provit

i used that combined with poultry spice but now i use gem matrix so i done use any other mineral powders unless im breeding as i dont use matrix then go back to normal grits
  15. my birds droppings are like the dropping in the pictures , i use 25% each of barley, wheat, beans and layer pellets, they are better than when racing so much so i am thinking of flying on the mix in the season with maize added 30-40 percent from wednesday and a little rape/homoform/dari ,, works out about £7 a bag but its not for the price its just the general condition of the birds
  16. orgainic layers pellets and bos pellets , tried gem 2 years back but i liked the bos pellets better, feathering was very good
