There are really tame that pair have to be careful where I tread in the shed as they sit right next to where I stand , the cock has bred winners the dam had bred winners with 2 different cocks so far, she is very aggressive on the nest take your life in your hands ringing get babies Glad you like them Thank you
-
Thanks a lot The dark uns come from the old wildermeersh dark cock my family have 2 fvw cocks as a base , he won the fed twice and is sire g/sire of fed winners bred by Shane Langton who picked the two cocks for me to base my team on
-
That's a good choice Alex the sire had 6 x 1st club and 6 good fed positions and bred a fed winner he is only a 2017 bred
-
Thanks lads lets hope we get to race sometime this year

I was thinking of feeding me hens barley all week and energy mix on a Thursday or Wednesday if the winds on them or he distance is over 170 miles
-
I really enjoyed that Michael Do you still use the system today I know you still love the distance races but do fats or carbs play a part more in the system

What like tumbler or fantail types Ryan ?
-
Cheers Ryan Thanks for the advice mate
-
Thanks Ryan I think that's give me food for thought , I am tempted next year to cut the cocks to 16 from 20 birds and pick 16 hens to race each week with 4 unraced hens kept back just for the returning cocks

Hi Michael On eBay there are small LED strobe lights about £6 each I bought 4 and dotm them about the garden my strikes have reduced since they run off AA batteries so cheap to run If the hawk wants to hit your birds they won't stop them but I do think they stop the opportunist strikes where the hawk has other optuons

When you were sprinting did you find widowhood cocks any better than total widowhood cocks obviously the hens performances made up for it for you but just wondered if you noticed any slight dip in the cocks I race 20 cocks and put the hens into 2 teams that go every other week but it doesn't work that well for the hens as they don't get the weekly races I , in the end last season I picked out 6 hens to go each week and they started to come well . I think I am nervous of the main cocks not having the hen in the box waiting for them due to the previous performances the Cocks have had . Your views on this would be most welcome

Lovely morning here Winds got up a bit and forecast to be stronger this afternoon

Down here sparrowhawks are a big problem The days of enjoying the birds in the garden are gone it's in the sky or in the loft , on Saturday I allowed my ybs a bit more freedom as I was staining the wood on the front of the loft so I was never away from them and got hit by a hawk Now I have to go back to the system of the last 3 or 4 years ybs out late in the day 30 mins only to they started to fly old birds in soon as they drop . I remember 3 years ago I was being hit every day one time I left the cocks in for 10 days I let them out on a Saturday after others had timed and got hit in 20 mins
-
I have not bathed mine outside for at least 5 years just can't take a chance with Hawks Got hit yesterday 12 foot from where I was standing
-
I agree I race 20 cocks and 8 hens plus 30/35 youngsters our lorry holds 1000 and at times we get 9/00/ 1000 at the start of the season old birds youngsters about 850 so no way could we do any age and if they limit what we send It's no good to me as I wouldn't want to stop start the cocks or the babies once I stArt like them to go each week
-
We could start early June and get say 8 Saturdays of old birds then start babies a couple of weeks later than usual and race to the very end of September

I would like separate racing I am not keen on any age I think if we get to race young bird races could be cut from 9 to 5 or 6 or be allowed to run a week or two longer to allow for old races
-
How many rings have we all ordered ? I had 60 as the rpra only sell in 20's I normally have 40 babies this year I have 12 pair of stock ( I don't breed out of racers ) I am ringing 48 for myself although it will be 45 due to a couple if dud eggs I will breed 12 to 15 or so to give away out if the racers in August to mates So 45 rings for myself
-
I had them in the early 80's and remember lots of big teams in my area 30 to 40 cocks and teams of 70 to 80 youngsters being common
-
