just curious if any fanciers remember the old ,",milers" these were racing pigeons, ,, but only raced one mile, i remember as a boy [just a short time ago ;D] i was in dovescote park in liverpool. fishing in dovesote pond with the old grandad, for minnows, tadpoles, etc,,seeing a man with a pigeon basket on the back of his bike,, when approaching him and talking to him, he explained these were " milers" timed with a stop watch,, there seemed to be big betting on these,, but the thing that struck me, was , he lifted a single pigeon, released it,, the bird flew in a straight line about 6ft high , skipping the chimney tops, going like the bars of hell,, no circling ,,just off , like lightning,, now if we could just get birds to do this, on the last mile of a race ;D ;D ;D would save valuable seconds ,, anyone know of these, or remember these

i have stated this,,, good pigeons can come in all shapes ,sizes and looks,, off course the same can be said about bad pigeons,, so, really, looks, size shape, in my opinion is not important,, whats more important,,,, is whats inside the bird ,,,,,,in its head!!! what the management consists of ,,knowing your individual pigeon,,etc,,, all play a part its certainly good to handle a lovely looking winning pigeon,, but not all winners are good handlers and good lookers ,,, they,, and their owner.. just seem to have that certain,,,it its the "it" bit that counts ;D

i have avg,, and error smart,, i know nothing about them,, only that it scans my computer, then repairs any errors :-/ ;D -
really just natural for a pair of pigeons to rear just two yb,s at a time,, this takes quite enough out of the old birds,, but it can be done, with a helping hand ,, but very difficult to get three absolutely perfect yb,s,, and really,, perfection is needed in yb,s

i think its natural, and quite common for pigeons to crave for various minerals/grits /pickstone,,yet still look like their after something, :-/,when feeding big youngsters ,,, you can only supply them, with as much variation in different grits /minerals /pickstones,as you can get,,,, a high protein diet often helps at this time,,

fairs fair ,, subject locked -
again, i would think this post would be contrary to most fanciers thinking,, but i can only say that in my own experience , have found this to be true,, i had a pigeon "the old meally" had a prize in every club race from 62 miles to 365 miles ,during his 9 years in racing this pigeon scored at over 500 miles 9 times ,, it won a penrith race[ 84 miles at] 9 years old [600 birds] [only bird on the pool sheet without a penny pool on it] ,this was his last race that year untill sent to averanches , over 500 miles some 7 weeks later, which he scored in the snfc, even" sir colin " won two worcestor races [250 miles approx] in two years, again his last race b4 going 5-600 miles

i beleive that good pigeons break to their new home easier,, if given the proper chance,,,,,,, i beleive this may be contarary to most fanciers beliefs,, but in my experience have found this to be true any pigeon not seeing the light of day i.e louella stud pigeons [old ones] or any pigeon that comes under these circumstances ,, will seldom home at all

this to me is the best post,,, and in my opinion, very true

you would need to find an avian vet in your area, or a very experienced fancier with the right kit,, that knows exactly what their doing,, if you cant find anyone,,, and want this test done,,, pm me,, the droppings test is usually for coccidiosis, worms and paratyphoid [salmonella] and some cankers [most cankers would need a swab test]

whats your views on whats the best addatives
jimmy white replied to fancypigeon_88's topic in Racing Pigeons
hi fancy pigeon in my opinion many fanciers use to many additives , the makers would have you putting a different additive every day, both in the water and the food ,[and have your money, as well ] in my opinion its far better to keep things as simple as possible, good clean dry loft, good quality feeding [and trying to get it right], clean minerals ,grits etc, i am a strong beleiver in garlic in their water [many dont agree on this , but this is only my opinion] a garlic would only cost about 30p ;D and would last long enough vit b ,,,brewers yeast is often a good pick me up, again fairly cheap,, ,,, ive often popped a cod liver oil capsule down them on occasions for the building up for the longer races , but in general very little additives -
if their flying an hour , they must be healthy enough,, keep the feeding fairly light, and try and let them out the same time every day,, its allways worth getting their droppings tested ,, does no harm,, and eases your mind,, best of luck,,
