to keep the gut flora healthy, especially after any treatment, mix a tub of live yogurt into their water -
maybe a wee tips for novices thread, would be helpfull , for the newcommer to the fancy condies crystals [permangenate of potash] can be bought very cheaply from the chemist this can be used as a disinfectant [a strong solution of crystals] put in a mr muscle ;D empty spray bottle [or the likes] it can be sprayed on perches , boxes all around the loft. [must be dry when birds come in] also add a few crystals to the bath water, making sure it isnt too strong , this will keep the lice down and bathe any minor cuts or grazes

im not aiming at you blaz,, [just a wee bit ;D] but all to often mods have had complaints that a post has been removed ,when in fact most are slotted to the proper slot,i,e lost, found, feeding, begginers, chit-chat, politics and very many more ,,,,read on top of the notice board, , "if unsure post here" ,,,,,,,,,,, [off course this includes webmasters private thread, where they are looked at by the webmaster, and if he sees fit to put them back up,,he does ] the reason being obvious , any valuable thread concerning information on pigeons health etc. would soon be lost in the realms of the" notice board" as with many more,, lost and found etc,,,

unfortunately any pigeon that has recovered from paramyxio virus, is normally left with serious defects.. better with prevention,, vaccination with nobilis or any other paramyxio vaccine, should provide immunity it is a must, to see an avian vet

Basket Training YBs
jimmy white replied to Speckled Jim's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
yes, robbie,, , i see what your meaning now i certainly meant no harm, in my post [im sure youll know that ] yes , its allways a good idea to take the basket drinker with you, whilst training yb,s, and a bottle of water, even if they dont take a drink, they will soon know where the water is,, merely by hearing the splashing, the main reason for my post was , that many [ill add many, many ;D] years ago, on a very warm day, i basketed my yb,s , then spent time collecting other members birds [having a chat , with each member ] but b4 realizing it,, these birds were in the basket, with no water, for over 5 hours, they would have normally taken 3/4 of an hour to do this distance , they , in fact arrived in dribbles and drabbles after about 2 hours, losing some ,,,,,,,with dried mud up to their bodies, lesson learned never again -

newspaper snippet ;D
-
that was the same as this snake,, allthough looking big in the pic,, it was about 3 feet [big enough to nearly give me a heart attack ;D ;D] beleive it or not , it was curled up in a nest pan, after eating an egg, when i scraped the box , it stuck its head up,with its tongue out ;D ,,,,,,well,,,toilet roll time ;D ;D ;D no one beleived me quite obviously , then it was found next door when some builders were working,, there was a snippet in the news paper about it ;D ,,,but at the time, the neighbours had it a 20ft cobra ;D , and keeping their kids, cats and dogs indoors ;D ;D ;D sounds so rediculous,, but true,,, ill try and find the newspaper snippet, if i can ;D ;D ;D

Basket Training YBs
jimmy white replied to Speckled Jim's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
with due respect robbie,, in my opinion, yb,s must be learned quickly to drink when in the basket,,yb,s deheydrate very quickly , it maybe ok in a short toss, but in a race, basketed overnight, for the first time, will have difficulty in finding the drinker,, therefore be at a big dis-advantage in dehydrating , when flying home, ,, i personaly think this is one of the reasons for some yb losses i would place priority in learning them to drink, with confidence, all they need, from the basket drinker hope you dont mind me saying this robbie , but past experience has prooved this for me [to my own dis-advantage] -
this is your best bet,, they will get used to it easier then

Getting birds back in
jimmy white replied to FoxesFan4Ever's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
as this is just the first day on your new system,, a little patience should do the trick,, pigeons are creatures of habit [be them good or bad ] but the ones staying out in the morning .. give them very little, when they do come in,,give a handfull of conditioner between them all when they come in,, and the ones out,, get none they should soon cotton on to this tit-bit and hopefully all eventually come in to-gether,, but your feeding must be right,, they can be hungry, without being starving ,, a few days can make a difference good luck -
hope it stays that way for you kipper,, i think after tomorrows feed , will tell,, this darn yb sickness can start very quickly,, but hopefully theve just picked up something , if so,, all should be clear after tomorrows feed,,good luck
