  1. i wouldnt hesitate in giving electro-lytes [or re-heydration salts] after any race. i have found by doing this, they do seem to recover quicker [but as all things with pigeons,,in moderation ]
  2. ;D ;D ;D too many jimmy,s ;D ;D ;D ive seen many distance fliers win feeding hopper fed tic beans , they dont eat so much and dont get fat,, especialy hopper fed,, but all roads can lead to rome ;D, i have in the past fed tic beans like this, but added a tit-bit now and again, then maize nearer the race

  4. with a little trapping mix,and a little maize ,nearer the race, you might just get a surprize ,, a good one i hope best of luck ,,,,,,,,will be looking at this space ;D

  6. certainly glad that the paramyxo is ruled out by the vet, but cannot understand why this vet didnt didnt check for paratyphoid or indeed make more checks, for any other underlying problem,, my thoughts are that most ordinary vets dont know enough about pigeons , in this case i would suggest a top specialist avian vet , maybe just one thing worth mentioning, that a pigeon that has recovered from paramyxo, can be left with a permanent nerve damage and dis-figurement :-/
  7. if this is w,hood cocks would go along with sapper, and would maybe add , if cocks are not trained , they will fly this distance around the loft , and would enjoy doing it, without the stress of travelling, basketing etc,, they can be tossed when needed , if needed if natural maybe
  8. i completely agree, great to read this, a marvelous venture

  20. i wouldnt break pigeons down as such, , i would much rather [depending on the type of race] feed some light seeds, with brewers yeast [a little kibbled peanuts if theve taken much out of themselves] , then a full normal feed later that evening , water being the main thing on arrival
  21. pigeons will fly to most anything they find confidence and feel secure in,, as a lad i flew a pair of pigeons to an orange box at the back of the coal cellar,,,and got a prize ticket if i had that loft ,in this thread at that time i would have been as proud as punch, i think the above poster is right , and may mean keith mott , who raced successfully to single boxes, as he has p. f, l, many youngsters have to start off somehow , this would be an ideal start for some youngster, with just a few pigeons, then graduating from there ,if keen enough
  22. rats will kill pigeons , usually eating the grain from their crop, once they have did this once, they will certainly do it again, their very crafty for traps , but i have found that chocolate is one of the best baits, and often gets the better of them. rats and mice are very bad for spreading paratyphoid [salmonella] ive kept ferrets for many years, very secure , from the loft, off course, but often run them under the loft and surrounds, i find this does tend to keep the problem of rats at bay, if the ferret corners a rat , it will kill it in seconds ,as shown on pic below
  23. a galley pot of grit or minerals etc,, allthough, needed by the birds, can be a haven for the spread of cocci etc, if left to go dirty or damp,, far better just putting enough in the pots for one day ,only my opinion
  24. i really new that ;D ;D ;D
  25. how much is a glug ;D ;D ;D ;D [sorry couldnt resist ;D]
