looks like youve did your homework dj, ,, my advice would be ,,wait for the droppings test results, then treat accordingly,, prevention is often better than cure ,, as you say, dampness is a haven for cocci, even worms etc

hi skull.. as far as im aware your in south africa,, i say this to let our fellow members know that your breeding time will be different than the uk, i note you suspect salmonella/paratyphoid, it sounds possible, but only a good avian vet will diagnose this,, well worth getting them tested,,, im wondering if you had a full hatch?? or any "dead in the shell" as this" dead in the shell" can be attributed to paratyphoid/salmonella ,, i say "can be" but the best advice i could give you is get them tested asap,,,, good luck

in some of the back posts on this thread you will read of the war pigeon " paddy" and the great feat that won it the "dicken medal" the trainer of " paddy" john mullen sadly passed away on the 23 october 2009 at the age of 88 years old. although suffering from cancer , and very ill, a few days before he passed away, john mullen managed to unvail a plaque in remembrance of this bird, may we remember john mullen for his deeds and actions , right up to his last few days, rest in peace john mullen

great post,,,strapper maybe worth adding that with pigeons, patience can be a great thing, unfortunately, there are often more "downs than ups" in pigeon racing, accepting and learning from these "downs" can be a challenge , even for old hands, but accepting these" downs" as a challenge, can be very rewarding , if worked carefully on.

90 m p h seems slightly high , but as above , this bird did 85 m p h ,, so it could be poss in the right conditions,, [that counts scotland out ;D ;D ;D]

when rearing young birds , the adult birds will eat very little maize, the growth rate of the yb,s from birth to 21 days is is very great,, and for this much protein is needed,, the birds themselves will tell you that,, i would suggest a galley pot of maples , in each nest box, kept topped up,, [even two galley pots ] this off course will encourage the yb,s to eat at a very early age, taking less out the ob,s,, i would also put baby milk in their water, [vits and protein],, then feed a mix of an evening , then a couple of handfull of peanuts,,,,,, hopper feeding a mixture, will only produce wasted grub,

just wondering if the aviary is maybe too open?.... if so maybe worth sheltering it slightly, i say this, as i , at one time, kept some hens in an open aviary, and had something like this,, it wasnt one eyed cold as there were no bubbles on the bottom eyelid,, i sheltered part of the aviary [where they roosted] and used pharma belge de weerd eye drops [yes weerd ;D ;D] simply really eye drops as mentioned b4 in this thread this one says on the bottle ;D disinfection of the eyes, mucouis membranes, the lacrymal canal, and the mucious membranes of the nose, in cases of swollen and wet eyes,, inflamed third eyelid [we used to call this third eyelid the nicky membrane],,but this bottle seemed to do the trick along with some shelter,,,,,but this aviary was completely wide open to the elements ,,,, another cheaper remedy ;D was to spit on to the birds eye [must be from a non smoker or drinker ;D, as clean spit contains an anti biotic , that can be of help. another remedy was golden eye ointment simply from the chemist,, dont know if you can still get this now, good luck

i may well be mistaken slinky, , but only noted them in pairs, and they didnt seem to have the same bars as the the b bar type of rock dove,,

the stock doves , dont have the bars like the rock dove, but are usualy seen in pairs, opposed to the more gregarious rock dove [in flocks]

yes i have found this also,, to me these" protein lumps" have always been a bit of a mystery, most if not all will say too much protein,, the bit i wonder about,, is , all the birds fed the same, why do the only odd one or two have these?? i have had these b4 , easy enough" cured" and found the pigeon to have no ill effects after having these, and race well .
