well done wuldon,,, a great interest,, sounds like a great set up and organization ,, anyway, rooting for you,, all the very best

as a tonic you can make nettle soup cut the top 6 inches of the stinging nettle , heat it in water, then add to the water, but i often wonder if these things are worth it,, ive tried all these things in the past,, it didnt really make any difference, only to me, as i thought i was doing good for the birds
-
it doesnt make the birds better,,,,,,,,,,but it makes them happier ;D ;D ;D pigeon tea contains herbs , supposed to cleanse the blood, relax them etc etc, im sure someone on the forum would know how to make it up,,, ive used it b4 , certainly did no harm, but found my results no different,, [i used columbine tea] i know if you make it strong the birds dont like it,[i even added sugar to take the bitterness away,,as ive tasted it myself, its very bitter so i would go for plain water as they would drink as they needed it on return from race, for reheydration,, but each to their own most use it on the sunday, day after the race
-
quite possibly , but remember many old scottish strains , good hard long distance type,, the old blood reds with the black splashes,, many of these originated from dr anderson ,, also remember, birrel of douglass water having these, in fact geordie bain [bain, wallace and spalding] the first partnership to win a snfc gold award, had these pigeons,, beautifull blood reds, bold headed, big wattled cocks , all the birds now seem to look henny ;D compared to these anyway
-
not sure about that one jonesy,, but know that most of the reds with black splashes are cocks, the red ch hens that have dark splashes are usualy dark brown if looked closely i had a dark grizzle y,b , now moulted out a very light grizzle strange thing this genetics ;D ;D ;D i had a bull terrier crossed with a schitsu ,, the pups were bullschits ;D ;D ;D ;D [ill get my books for that one ;D ;D ;D]

i would say different mike,, a homer could be any fancy pigeon ,, or any pigeon that homes and a racer , excactly that mind you, there are some racers like homers ;D [the slow ones ]
-

yes ive had that ,, also had a chocolate [pigeon ;D not roses ;D],,,each year it moulted it grew more white feathers, after 4 years there were more white splashes on it,, than chocolate,, this bird was a hammond and whiticker grooter

hi strapper although i do agree definitely there is more inbreeding to-day than of yesteryear, and most definitely this could also be a factor,, lack of the hybrid vigour,, , but again in days gone by pigeons were still inbred, [probably to a lesser extent than now] but the main point being, that any ailing bird was suppressed , i believe nowadays that many inexperienced fanciers pay far too much money for pigeons, thinking its the way to success, and will try and save a lack lustre yb just because its bred from such and such, ,, but a great post strapper,, nice to have a constructive debate about the birds
-
an excellent post, which i agree with entirely, i can never get my head round" the nowadays" factor in treating blindly :-/ most fanciers i speak to nowadays , have a programme of treatments,," cocci at that time", followed by" canker at that time" ,followed by " worming at that time" ,etc. etc. off course these are cures,, not preventatives,,, so, how can one possibly know, their cocci level is high" at that time", the canker level higher" at that time" etc etc etc,, and the other one",im giving them anti-biotics just to make sure their ok" again these anti-biotics are cures, not preventatives, my thoughts are as above, by doing this continually, we are now breeding pigeons with less constitution, less immunity, and giving more money than ever b4 to the so-called suppliers,,,,often needlessly , powders and potions which are completely useless, hyped up by adverts,,,,,,,,,, a good dry loft with good ventilation and clean water ,without propped up birds,,, fanciers laugh at that now as though it was outdated,, but while they are laughing, the suppliers are laughing louder, and the birds are weakening faster and faster over the years,, i very much doubt if fanciers can go " back to basics" now, as its taken years of medications to get to this stage,, and would take many more years of immunity" build up" to get" back to basics",,my opinion only on budgies post [which ive slightly deviated from] a vet saying that a pigeon is a carrier of canker is odd ,,as they all are,, all pigeons will have some level of trichimoniasis [canker],[and theres many different types] its only when this level rises to an extent that makes the pigeon ill, it is troublesome, and although an excellent and outstanding pigeon without a doubt, by no means says it will breed winners , with any cock, unfortunately,,, again, only my opinion [but who knows of the grandchildren of this bird ]
-
pigeons are intelligent as far as pigeons go :-/ :-/ :-/ ,, they have a memory second to none, and many, many many other "pigeon" attributes,, but when you see one trying to take a tobacco stalk through their nest box door,,,,,,,,,,,sideways ;D ;D ;D,,,,, bird brained really ;D,,,,,,,,,but as nature would have it, they,ll still get it in the nest somehow
-
yes ;D ;D ;D doesnt make the birds better,,,,,,,,,,,but sure makes them happier ;D ;D ;D,, only kidding, no alcohol,, a little cider vinegar,, but im sure the birds sense its going to be freezing and take bigger drinks,
-
