It is with much sadness and also fond memories when I learned of Bobby's Passing Bobby and his Late Father presented me with the finest breeding blue cock that I owned in over 40 years May you Rest in Peace my Friend Condolences to his Family From the Currie Household
-
The blue cock I got in 1973 that founded the loft was a grandson of Tinto goldmine He bred the finest hen I ever raced from Rennes She bred a federation winner when she was 10 years old It bred old horseshoe when she was 10 years old He is 19 years this year and is the grandfather of pigeons I have been 2nd section and 4th open with Good to see that blood still winning here today

All those years ago in the seventies racing from wamphray ,We had a tap at the loft which was gravity fed from the neighbours Well up the hill got to agree birds were in wonderful condition ,Once at a moot and asked about its benefit The panel just drew blank faces apart from Henk de Weerd who said it had many benefit s for the racers

A Very well put together article once again by Tom Corrie, Well done Callum Nice to see Bobby Todd getting a mention ,it was Bobby that gifted me the blue cock that founded my loft way back in the seventies ,I hear he is not of best health at the moment if anyone reads this who Knows him please pass on my Good Wishes

What I can tell you 100% Anthony is that they are the perfect vantage point for the peregrine Falcon ,The pylons run from east to west 3 miles south of where I live and the falcons have used them to great advantage when attacking my birds especially the yb's when they are training their own a nightmare Mate Atb Mick

40 odd years ago as a lad racing the doos at my parents ,We didnae have a car or a telephone never mind access to pigeon products ,Remember if a bird was down and on looking in its throat it had cheesy deposits etc , I used to borrow a wee drop of my fathers finest Whisky and dip a cotton bud in it then go about cleaning the birds throat worked every time although the doo was Blootered for a wee while never looked back although someone said they could drop of at the pub on the way home if they acquired a taste ,My grizzle that walked home must have been on Johnnie Walkers Black Label

Never forget the Summer of 1997 ,I raced at the time at a farm on the outskirts of Moffat with unbroken views ,You could see the Cumbrian hills 50 plus miles away on a clear day We had just raced from Cheltenham on the Saturday approx 250 mls ,I had dropped a yearling grizzle cock When I returned home at lunchtime 12 noon on the Wednesday The couple from Wales and their friend came up for holidays and stayed next to my house in a static caravan which they owned The husband Dave called to me Mike do you have a minute I will call the others out as what I am about to tell you is gospel ,We were sitting on the varanda this morning having breakfast and my wife noticed something move at the far end of the field We got the binoculars out and it was a pigeon that continued to walk towards us stopping frequently for a rest ,it finally made it to your garden but was unable to fly over the fence it then walked up under the gate into the field and up your driveway and round to your loft if you go look its a white coloured one Sure was the grizzle cock at Deaths door ,I was going to set him by for the season but when he had recovered he took up with a young hen he raced the sky's with Her and came back into such wonderful condition I decided to enter him in the fed race from Sartilly ,There were only 5 timed on the night I clocked him next morning to win the first yearling in the club and a top 20 open prize The effort that bird had made when walking from the Cheltenham race and the true distance he covered unable to fly lives with me to this Day Suppose that's why I Never condem a bird from returning out of race time

After forty odd years I still get a buzz each time they return even if it's from the neighbours chimney As for a battle hardened strain try to source the best and try to better them ,somewhere along the line a certain pair will produce the goods on more occasions than most from good fortune rather than good choice .

Fao Owen Having over the last few days thought about your reply regarding me loosing the plot somewhere along the line regarding Barley I feel I must reply for the sake of the new starter I have raced pigeons since 1972 with more than my share of success Also stated in previous posts were the words of the legendary Eddie Newcombe who in his words would not touch Barley with a barge pole I as a very young fancier competed in the very difficult Rennes gold cup race of 1979 when only 32 pigeons were clocked on the night from a convoy of 7500 The race winner that night was Mr Eddie Newcombe One of only 4 fanciers to have won the gold cup 2 times I was 2nd section beaten by Mr Jack Wylie another who won the gold cup twice My cousin Ben Scott of Brydekirk was 3rd Section He was the first loft in Scotland to Win 3 Gold Awards from 500+ miles against an average in those days of 7500 pigeons Ben timed 3 that night I timed 2 The legend Jock Allen Won the West Section that Night So the Company I flew with were very Special Indeed Eddie Newcombe , Ben Scott and Myself Never EVER Fed Barley So in Future if you wish to educate New Fanciers on the wonders of Barley Please do so with the Knowledge that others have and still do without its Use have very Continued Success Continued Success and Good Wishes for 2014 Yours in Sport Michael Currie
