I was told beans are at there best when a couple of years old,is this a fallacy ?

Prefer mature beans during the rearing time also during racing. During the moult and after the moult tho it may not be as important.

Although Eddie Newcombe once said a bean was never meant to be old before eatin. He said it was meant to be eatin as new saying that their were more nutrients in them when still new.

When u think of it other grains are best eatin before they get old before all the goodness goes out of them.

However as most know beans carry a lot of moisture and some fanciers wont feed new beans prefering to wait til a yr old or sometimes 2 yr old before using.

Personaly i belive depending on what bean they are (type) and where they came from has a lot to do with it. When they were gathered in how they were stored etc. I believe some pigeons cant handle new beans as they may be a little accidic or something to that effect hence the reason for some maturity. I have to say tho that its not that big a deal with plenty of minerals, clay blocks and grit it seems to nulify the effect if you get my drift.

As Peter said, Court Farm Feeds near Hereford are good quality and reasonable. They do a Peas mix which the Welsh lads like.

Down by Cardiff there is a farm near the Airport sells Beans. Used to advertise in the pigeon papers.

Also Roger Sutton near Congleton sells his own farm beans etc.He is one of the main dealers for Van Robaeays. £8 for 25kg for his beans last year.

Near Evesham there is a farm there does some also, but can't remember the name. They used to deliver to Scotland a lorry load every year.

I was told same John. Saw them dribble over Black tic - bics etc.

But read a very good article that it is tish. It was thought that black meant fat reduction etc.

Fat is exactly the same. May lose a little natural oil, which isn't good as birds get all their oils etc. from their feed.

May be I will sort the out sometime and put it up.

Cooks Farm Leicester haven't any yet (Well hadn't last Monday) ... But at £6 25p per 25 K are a good bean at the good price.

Peter Court Farm often have a good price for Groats ... Great in rearing. Will have to check for prices and when in ... Cheaper for me to drive down and fetch than have delivered. Twice a year I have 6 bags. A. for Feeding and B. for racing mix.

True John ... why it is a good mix in rearing I believe.

Also as the Scots will tell you lol, it releases units of heats - energy, slowly over a period of time.

THat is why, I and many others, believe that the Porridge is one of the best feed sauces there is.

Porridge lowers the Cholesterol and controls my Diabetes.
