peter pandy Posted May 13, 2017 Author Report Posted May 13, 2017 Friday had me ailing for some malady and feeling not quite a 100% wearily picked out half the team to send to Wakefield. Going to the club and wishing it was my bed I was going too could not get uplifted with the result saying the loft was 14th in the Fed last week. As soon as I hit home I was in bed without a nightcap.Still feel rough this morning and notified Midland are up 13.15 S/W wind.. Good luck to all.
peter pandy Posted May 14, 2017 Author Report Posted May 14, 2017 Effing disaster for me and I think the team has got the flu instead of the flew with one third of the team home yesterday and last one at 21.40..nothing to-day so far..
peter pandy Posted May 18, 2017 Author Report Posted May 18, 2017 Wee Mary and I have spent what felt like a near death experience this past couple of days with the Flu and sincerely hope all can avoid it. How we managed to contract it is worrying especially when we were given our winter Flu jabs last year so perhaps this is another variation.Down in the loft with half the team missing I am down to 26 birds with 5 of them missing feathers with the Bassas and I am really "F" off with the usual RSPB crap how they are looking after our heritage.Aye Stevie the training baskets were out this week and road work commenced due to the flock not exercising. Now they are all down on eggs so they should have regained a good level of fitness in a week or two.Between being chased to nest, losing partners etc some have not been raced since the first race and I feel perhaps a 150 mile jump might see the back of some of them so will send them as trainers with another Fed which is not going down so far.Going over my diaries I came to the conclusion that it is the same families I am losing this year as the ones lost over the past 2 years so I dont expect to have any of them left soon and perhaps the three families left in the loft might get me over the pond.P.S. Finished with 8 from 15 last week and am not alone with serious losses..You pay good money for stock and all you breed is crap from them which makes you wonder how you can be taken in so easily by clever advertising. But "Hey Ho" I wont be alone in that respect..
peter pandy Posted May 22, 2017 Author Report Posted May 22, 2017 Having sent an unlucky 13 to the 170 mile race which were held over due to weather conditions saw 11 returning in the showers they met on the way, however I am quite pleased on their return as not one went to the drinker until after a feed which suggests that they were able to look after themselves while in the transporter with "Tiger" looking after them. I have maintained for many a year that holdovers give the birds great experience especially when they have not too far to race home. Returns as usual are erratic with some good some bad but that's Doo racing for you in this day and age..
peter pandy Posted May 27, 2017 Author Report Posted May 27, 2017 Finished up last week with 13 from 13 which is a first this season. Started training 20 this week and all went well until Friday which saw me puggled in the 32 C heat and sitting in the garden noticed that even the wild birds did not want to fly as normal.. On entering the loft yesterday afternoon found young dead in the nest and could only put it down to the heat as even the drinkers were empty although each would normally have half a litre still remaining so decided after taking consultation with my conscience to keep the birds at home this week-end. To-day Saturday the local lads have had the misfortune of very gappy returns which may affect their entries in next weeks National..Should the weather improve a bit I will resume training from the 25 mile mark for a couple of days with the 2 year olds and stop the Yearlings which have completed the almost 200 mile mark and put past for next year.
peter pandy Posted May 30, 2017 Author Report Posted May 30, 2017 With 4 Hens feeding a 7 day youngster on Thursday this will be my entry for the National from Buckingham. It did cross my mind to send all that were available but not being a mob flier that thought was extremely fleeting. The 4 Hens are well rounded and have covered over 500 miles racing and training in the past 20 days which should see them put a performance in for this 300 miler as they are fit and feeding their first young for the year which should give them the incentive to race home. I have noticed thanks to the ETS system that 2 Cocks paired to two of the Hens above have been coming to the front and may join the 4 on the entry sheet but will gauge their reaction when the hens are basketed although they never leave the nest box and cover the youngster when I remove the Hen so obviously are keen on them, They too have completed the same mileage as the hens... Just as an extraordinary circumstance,, the 4 youngsters came from two nests that were not supposed to hatch and chipped out after 22 days incubation, AYE,, I am still trying to get my head round that one..

peter pandy Posted May 31, 2017 Author Report Posted May 31, 2017 Mr Hunter's reply does not really quantify a reply but for the uninitiated "When on NATURAL you endeavour to have the birds kept as near to NATURAL as possible" This does not include shoving dummy eggs under them which I am sure they know the difference, and substitute babies were being provided should I require them from a friend. The birds can and will sit for longer periods and come to their own decision on leaving and returning to nest for another round. Just for you John I am sending 2 Hens which have sat and hatched naturally and 2 hens which have sat and been given chipping eggs which have hatched out within hours of being given them and goodness me they are as keen as mustard..The clock time will tell if they are good enough.

Peter if the two cocks are telling you they are coming up the front, why the doubt in sending them, they would be my number one choice then the 4 hens that are trailing behind, and I'd start by removing the hens two days before basketing, to make both sexes keener
peter pandy Posted May 31, 2017 Author Report Posted May 31, 2017 My appologies for not elaborating a bit more regarding two Cocks which are showing a bit of keeness in training, The four Hens this week are always first followed by the two Cocks and I am only counting seconds from first to sixth with others perhaps minutes behind. At present I train my team of 20 once per week with roughly 600 other birds from 25 miles and they are usually all home to me within 5 minutes and the following day I train on my own and are rarely split up from 20 miles. It certainly makes a difference when sitting in the loft and not looking at stooges on a perch bored when on NATURAL Cocks are trying to get into the nests to join the Hen and much more pleasant on the eye as other things are taking place within the colony as well or it certainly feels that way to an old codger like myself. :emoticon-0136-giggle:
