kingziemckay Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 what are your views on basket training?
billt Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 I presume you are talking youngsters, I think It's a must to teach them to find the drinker
paddymac Posted December 9, 2015 Report Posted December 9, 2015 An absolute must for Ybs as it serves them well if ever held over. It also will benefit in future seasons when being sent to the longer race points and being longer in the crates.
ALF Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 We spoke about this at our show last week some do it some don't my own thoughts on it are if a bird can't find water in a race basket it will never be any good anyway
Dooheed 5 Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 if you've got the space by all means do it !! Anything to educate em is a Bonus !! Certainly widna do any harm !!

Mossgiel Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 I no longer basket train mine, but I ensure that the exact same type of drinking troughs are used in the loft as those on the transporter.
yeboah Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Basket trained the youngsters well over forty years ago it was just something that was doneMind you only bred 30 in those daysDon't basket train them now if I was honest couldn't tell you when I stopped I care for loads of youngsters that drop in during the season ,at its height can have up to 20 plus per weekI have a full size race hamper in the feed store where they are cared for ,and also individual boxesWhat I do know from years of watching if there are in excess of 15 per basket they can't get to the water FACTHence the individual boxes or water hung on three sides ,inside and changed three times daily If the basket numbers were halved on race night returns would improve and birds would access water Jmho
