Tony C Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 thank you . i was beginning to think nobody had read the post ? he trod her today , so he,s still keen ,just 6 years old .I read the post and was going to suggest putting the drinker in her nestbox Joking apart.... I think sometimes we lose sight of the fact that they're flesh & blood where hormones and the like play a big part. As Walter says a cold snap could put things on hold, when she's ready she's ready.
Valiant Fifer Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 think its just the cold snap we had andy a few still to lay myself but now its milder expect them to lay in the next week only problem when the hens take so long to lay you can get one or both eggs empty because the cock gets fed up treading her and nothing happening not so bad with young cocks there keen the other thing is she just might not be happy in box try putting something on the floor round the drinker to stop her getting so close to it i used two plastic 5 liter containers or paint cans anything to keep them off that spot i have one hen lays on floor right in the middle of the door now i handle her everyday till i feel the egg then lock her in the box so she has to lay it in the box i leave one half of the box opened so her cock can find her and thinks she has claimed the box then lock her in again for the second egg to be layed 9 times out of 10 they will sit them just a few ideas for you palSound advice Walter. Could even try putting the drinker up on a shelf and maybe put a hopper across where the bird has been trying to lay, probably wont get piece to lay there when the birds are eating. That should discourage it and then so lock her in a box as u say above.
showman Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 If she decides to nest beside the drinker again, empty drinker and put it back in same place. Introduce a 2nd drinker somewhere else, at a distance away or higher up if possible.
