Hi Lads,

weve been flying a few yrs now and this yr we really want to have a good go at the distance.. ive seen on a few dvds that they only select a few races before the big one is this what most of you on here do? also how do u prepare a bird for the distance ie: how many races do you like them to have as a yb then yearling and when u pick a long race how many races would you like them to have and what length of time on the wing ect... really interested in all your opinions as im only just starting to fly the distance this yr so any help would be great

Cheers lads

every race as a yb 5or6 races to 350 miles as yearling then 3to4 races to 260 280 miles and hope to get 8 hours or more on the wing on the final prep race about 3to 4 weeks before the the main event giving me time to set them down the way they race best

With distance birds I only send to 3 / 4 young bird races just purely to show them the ropes and school them without burning them out and let them mature . As yearlings I race up to 360 miles although I may send a few further .In a distance loft your looking for a team of two year olds +. The more patient you are the better they will be :)

Our Babys don't get to much, all they have is a few 20 miles by car and 3-4 100 miles on a training waggon.

The 2yr old on over all have to go to 500+ miles Internationals. The 2yr olds only go to 1 but the 3+ yr olds have to do 2x 500+ mile Internationals.

In Preperation for this they have 1-2 inland training races at 100miles, then 3-4 Channel races out to 260m. We like them to have 6-8 hrs on the last flight about 10-17 days prior to basketing for their first International race.

should have added once i find the birds that are breeding distance winners im not so hard on there youngsters as long as they are well trained to make sure there is no weakness but when trying to find them out they get all the races before my money goes on them as 2yr olds

Very Good advice Walter

Just back in from carrying out some loft work for a close friend who is a 4 times national winner from 500-600 mls

Nothing fancy about the way he sets them up But Very Good Pigeons bred for the job in hand

Walter what is your pigeons preparation after they come back from the eight hours fly until they go into the basket for your target race?

1st 3rd 6th 17th 28th region E at the SNFC Gold Cup over the past seven years its no as good a record as Jim Hannahs but i am happy way it but trying to keep it going is the hard part as you know. There is nowt fancy way my methods after the last preparation race I gee them aboot a week to do what they want then its work way the flag for about an hour each night then about 5 x 50minute tosses up to the sat before basketing and I try and get them sitting aboot 12 days as I think it is the safest condition that's aboot it Derek. Oh by the way I would like to gee them longer tosses but as you know the peregrine problem is usually at its height at that time of year so its dodgy as futt for us in this area to go further.
