geordie1234 Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 In the old days we fed the BMW system, Beans, Maize and Wheat. They did well at the distance but believe me they didn't return in the superior condition that they do nowadays. Using the more scientific mixtures and feeding methods DEFINATELY helps at the extreme distances although their will be plenty of pigeons to contradict this theory. Roger Bannister beat the 4 minute mile and fell over the line. Look at the athletes nowadays, they run marathons and don't even break sweat. Must move with the times lads imo.
Delboy Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Only going by my experiences George, bottom line is ye need the tools first, they'll still win fed on baked beans lol.

What would you say was a more scientific mix then Derek?
Delboy Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 What would you say was a more scientific mix then Derek? Well most mixes are decent quality now m8, they are all well balanced diets scientifically designed to optimize the pigeons health. You now get a variety of mixes for specific race distances.
dal2 Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Nice clean widow mix for me through the racing. Supplement that with Wotever conditioner/fats/tonic you wish from there. Do you think they could get all requirements from a single feed?

Do you think they could get all requirements from a single feed? I don't know about one feed that I would feed start to finish ( 60-600mls) that would give them everything I think they needed but there are a few that come close Dal. There are mixes for different distances though, without the need to use supplements.

Only reason I asked Derek was that I moved house 8 year ago, started racing again two year later on beans and had a few good results once the distance increased. Decided beans were slowing them down in the shorter races and started trying different mixes and since then results have got worse. In fact so bad even got ybs this year with natural y/bs. Got them over it and put all birds back on two year old beans again and droppings like marbles again. Will be back racing on the beans again next year. Thanks for the reply.

Food for thought m8.I believe the fella Fyfe from West Lothian fed beans and hemp to his Ancenis birds this year and he was 3rd and 19th open .Im not decrying feeding beans, im saying I feel the modern methods and feeds are designed more for optimum results and health.
geordie1234 Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Read somewhere the pigeon only gets 7% protein from a bean the rests gets shat oot
Guest bigda Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 would say beans are crap and the reason for it would be if a pigeon depended on getting it in the wild they would be long gone dead, trying to break the pod open. but what i would say is linseed is the thing that keeps them in the nick the smart pigeon lives on the side of the road eating grit, and there it eats flys and grubs till it is well enough to get home.
peter pandy Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 Fed nothing but beans not to many years ago and they won from 60-620 Mls and I can honestly say that many of the top distance men in Wales feed beans in pots as their staple diet also the late Dennis Dall was a great bean feeder amongst others. Yes additions are added mainly carbs and fats in preparation for specifc races BUT dont knock beans in preferance to modern feeds and I have went back to beans as I have tried all the modern rubbish without success. Birds prefer to eat all the small rubbish in modern feeds leaving whats best for them till last or leaving it all to-gether.
geordie1234 Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 I'm going to try a show mix next season can't mind the name but it's very high in protein
andy Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 Fed Beans for years during moulting and the lead up to channel racing
