Guest chad3646 Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 J & P Dora, Arbroath, 583 miles with their Ch Cock, "The Fifer " wrong
Henrik Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 wrongLooks correct to me according to the yearbook
glencameron Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 John & Paul Dora was the King cup from Rennes in 1961 into Arbroath and to my knowledge is the furthest North winner of the Kings cup from Rennes. Also this pigeon won the race on the day. It was a real super pigeon , it scored previously from Rennes , it topped the old Tayside Federation from Cheltenham(this now contains Dundee, Angus and Aberdeen feds) amongst many other prizes The furthest North winners of the Kings cup was G Willox and Heathers Dream in 1998 from Alencon A nice article that verifies the above is in the attched link www.snfc.co.uk/article/SNFC%20History.doc All Kings cup winners deserve the recognition.
Guest chad3646 Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Looks correct to me according to the yearbook henrik i have just read this in a book, the longest distance that the race has been won was by a blue ch cock surp. 57t802 the name is correct but the distance is not it reads 585 miles and there was 5,280 birds in the race

It would appear the distance shown in the SNFC year book is incorrect ??

alec guinness Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 The Fifer Real quality, what a bird and what the" Gold cup"is all about,Scotland's premier race of the year, should be every fanciers dream. I have got the same picture on the front of an old gazette.

John As a boy in the mid / late sixties I was on a youth club summer camp and the hostel where we were staying was straight across the road from Dora,s cafe / ice cream shop in Arbroath, at the time I had no idea how famous the name Dora was in the sport but had noticed the birds exercising during the day and when in the shop asked his son ( I think ) who belonged to the pigeons. I was told to chap the back gate the next day if I wanted to see the birds which I duly did , at the time his father Mr Dora would have been a fair age but took the time to show me around the lofts and birds, I don't know if I seen the famous Nat winner Fifer but have never forgot this visit as a boy

lanarkshire lad Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 I know an old chap that is still living today who knew J Dora and was at his place the day Mr Massarella visited and tried to buy the Fifer but there was no way Dora was going to sell it.
Guest Basin View Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 This post brings back many memories for me when I first started keeping doos in the mid sixties when I was still at school. My uncle David Scott, Brechin, was a very good friend of Johny Dora, the first young bird my uncle David gave me was a 1966 unrung blue hen bred from a daughter of 'The Fifer" The Dora blue hen when paired to a cock bred by Carlin Bros, Kilbarchan, ( also given to me from David ) bred winners and birds to be timed in right out to Nantes, 657 mile. The first time David took me to Mr Dora's was while the judging was being done at an Arbroath open show before we went into Mr Dora's house , I was told by my uncle David to listen to everything that was being said...the character of the man was that he had time for young lads kept asking me questionsa and as well as telling me when to pair up birds, etc...he also asked me when do you know a bird was fit.....got a strange answer whenI asked him the answer. The year 'The Fifer" won the national Johny also won the Fife/ Tayside Combine from Dol with a pigeon called 'Rocky" ( think it was named after Rocky Marciano ) a loft in top form. Mr Dora was a true gent who had time for young fanciers.

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 Alec wales famous cock 12th open at 8 years old and a cracking lift! excellent stuff Billy Gardiner could fairly rattle them into the Solway at that time
Guest chad3646 Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 talking about distance again, does cock o the north bred and raced by alber t bruce, frazerburgh, scotland still hold the record for having flown the longest distance into great britain ? surp55.3071 1,140 miles
Guest Basin View Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 Good post Gareth putting up the 1961 Rennes result. As I have posted before the old traditional race points from years ago always seem to have a better across country spread. Winner east section, 4th open West section, top 50 positions East 22, West 15 and south 13, notice 3rd west section 12th Open is flying up into Dumbarton. Am I wrong in saying the West from Avranches, Rennes and Nantes, had more positions than they do these days from the easterly race points.

British and European Long Distance record holder. I don't think this is the European record anymore, but as far as I'm aware it's the British
