walterboswell59 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Report Posted January 19, 2014 ok guys now we know the basics of keeping pigeons and we kmow we have good birds that are fit and healthy how do we get that wee bit extra out of them the answer is observation and motivation know what your pigeon wants and likes jealousy is a powerful tool when I only raced a dozen or so years ago I would kid the life out them and win lots of money in the first 5 or 6 races up to cheltenham 280 miles to me here is how I did it there are lots of things you can try to stimulate them like pairing 2 cocks with one hen then the cocks don't see each other until one hour before basketing and there are a few ways to do this you can lock the hen in the box then let both cocks in and they will fight to claim the box with the hen in it let them fight for a minute then basket them I found the winner of the fight was first home most of the time or let one cock in the box with the hen and the dominant cock locked out trying to get to them 5 or 10 mins of this is enough then basket them but if you send all three put a few bob on the hen too as I was caught out with that one and won the race with the hen lol seems some girls like two guys fighting over them another wee tip with old cocks is if there hen is on point of lay handle the hens and gentlay push your finger just under the hens anus if it feels hard and pointed she will lay that night and the older cocks know it pool them if it feels very round and swollen she will lay the next day in both cases dont send the hen as she will lay in the basket or stop enroute if its a hard race but you will get a go out the cocks I also made a set of six nest boxes that had a removable partion in the middle one hour before basketing I pulled out the wooden partion and put in a perspex one then every 15 minutes I moved the nest bowls closer until they were right next to each other and wondering why they can't attack one another then in the basket with them this works with both the cocks and the hens these are things you can do to stimulate them but if there kidding themselfs you have to be observant to see whats happening then take advantage of it like a cock trying to claim another box or wanting in another section let them have what they want then take them away from it and give it back to them just before basketing watch what they want and use it to your advantage for the longer races the best tip I have found is darkness when your cock or hen is set up for the race you want on its favourite nest condition if its the cock your having a go with when he has been sitting 4 or 5 days darken the nestbox right down by cutting cardboard up to to cover the box by tacking it with push tacks or weave it through the spars if it the hen your trying with wait till shes sitting about 10 days then darken it down you want to use this about 3or4 days before you basket them watch and you will see the pigeons whole demenour change they will crouch lower in the bowl sit tighter with the eyes poping out there head they love it and become very broody also cut some sheets of wood about two foot square and lean them against the wall in each corner pin it to the wall at an angle so it can't fall on them and watch them fight to claim them theres lots of things you can do to stimulate your birds into giving you that wee bit more effort but if your observant you will see lots of thinks happening in the loft naturaly then its up to you to use it I'd rather sit and watch my birds for an hour than go in and disturb them with a scrapper when racing starts I stay out the loft only going in to basket feed or water give them piece dont keep catching and lifting birds they don't like it sit where you can see what there doing and you will learn much more about your birds and that's really all I can tell you guys hope its of interest to you all
