its a shame I cant put photo,s up. have brought 4 old bottles of whisky home tonight from Mrs Burgess late Grand-fathers home . unfortunately they've all been opened at some-time in the past . "Heatherdale" 70cl has some age ,yet has a barcode on the rear label . ive not heard of this brand ,wonder how old it is ?

"Grants" 1 litre also has a barcode on the rear, label looks aged ??

"Teachers" 1 litre again , no barcode , duty free for export only ,this has the old silver coloured measuring top (ive not seen these since 70,s) ??

"Famous Grouse" 1.13 litre (ex-optic style label) ??

trying to date them approx. ,ask me any questions to help ? just want to know when I come to take a "wee dram" wether I am sinking a 20 , 30 ,or 40 year old nip :emoticon-0123-party:

As a Whisky cognisor, you can't tell how good it is until you drink the drop at the bottom of the bottle, so you should send them over to me and I will give you my expert opinion. :emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl:

Andy, they don't age in the bottle, leastways not very much, if at all. Their aging is done in the barrels before they are bottled. The blends also take their age from the youngest malt used. 30YO Laphroig, 15YO Bowmore blended together give you a 15YO blend.

yes Andy , I know , I have some Glenfidich bottles here ,20 and 18 year old ,that haven't been touched yet and were bottled in 2006 ? just would be nice to know when I drink the Grants (which I have found was bottled 3rd feb 1970 )tastes any better or not maybe .also found after 12 years in the cask virtually no change to flavour taste ??? :emoticon-0138-thinking:

It would appear that international shopping barcodes were introduced only from 1991 ! That's one to keep in mind for pub quizzes. Brings to mind I was presented for my 60th birthday from my old boss a bottle of Haigs Dimple complete with the copper wire tie which was bottled pre 1950 and me being a true Scot thought it would be worth a few bob so when I retired I took a few nick knacks to Christies the auction house in Edinburgh. The whisky expert reckoned it was only worth drinking and to enjoy, Although I moaned a wee bit I had a couple of friends round and they scoffed the lot including 2 gallons of my home brew. Me I never touch whisky as its like firewater to an indian but those who drank it reckoned it was the best they had ever tasted. The miserable gits never as much as gave me a packet of fags for the sore heads they had next day. Served them right that they never sobered up for two days.

It was Andy but the boss told me he had it as a gift when he built the house in 1950 and it had been in the wine cellar still boxed since then.
