Guest Steves Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 My birds are really well into the moult and I am not sure wether its safe to send em like it.It's last race tomorrowHow do I know when to stop them?Do I go by primaries left or bald patches on the head or what? Can't really afford to lose any more but I'd like to send anywayApologies for my ignoranceIt's my first yearI've all the gearJust no idea
OLDYELLOW Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 If had 3 / 4 races put them away they've had experience racing
St Finnan Loft Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 Good advice, you will be better making plans over the winter while looking at some proven birds rather than maybe regrets with empty perches.
showman Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 If they're 'falling apart' as you say.......don't send.
maverick Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 what would you rather have take a chance and one more race this year or leave them at home and have a good few races from them next year and years to follow
Guest IB Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 I let the moult guide me what to send, and what not to, based on a combination of conditions including the weather forecast for the race day. If its wind and rain, I don’t send birds that are loose feathered (coverts missing, bare about head & ears etc) IMO birds flying through those kind of weather conditions need good tight feathering. The last Primary I usually send on is No7. I’ve had a couple on No8 this year, but it is difficult to judge when that next flight is going to be thrown, and throwing any flight from 7 to 10 in my experience does impact on the bird’s ability to fly / get home. Last weekend was a disaster for me because using these criteria I had only 3 fit to go – and failed to time in from 157 miles. My fancied pigeon was sent full cover and No6 ¼ way up - she arrived 5 hours after the race was won. I doubt if her moult had any bearing on her performance. I think she flew many more miles than the race point. My 2nd bird arrived next morning. He was my second fancy, having just been given a new mate on the Friday. He was sent full cover and No7 ½ way up. He’d dropped both No8s in the race basket – and that gave me a pointer on my 3rd pigeon’s reason for failure because he was sent full cover and No7 ¾ way up – I realised he was close to dropping the next one, but expected him to drop No8 after the race. He’s never shown up. So End of Season Dance for me was last weekend with 2 races left. I trained & raced 15 YBs. Dropped 3, killed 3 (sickness) so 9 left for next year, all trained round the compass and raced to 100 miles. Quite happy at that.

Leroy Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 "Cant really afford to lose any more" sums it up perfectly to me mate. Keep them for next year. all the best Lee
just ask me Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 will also depend on your plans for next year if racing cocks next year pick the best of the hens and send them leave the cocks at home
Guest Steves Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 Thanks for the repliesI have some latebreds to fall back on if disaster strikes.
just ask me Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 Thanks for the repliesI have some latebreds to fall back on if disaster strikes. just be careful latebreds can fall very quickly as old birds unless you know your family and know there from proven racing stock they have a better chance then
Guest chad3646 Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 just be careful latebreds can fall very quickly as old birds unless you know your family and know there from proven racing stock they have a better chance then it doesn,t matter if they are of proven stock 1 in a 1000 latebreds will only make the grade remember the 98% rule
just ask me Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 it doesn,t matter if they are of proven stock 1 in a 1000 latebreds will only make the grade remember the 98% rule maybe thats the way you breed them :emoticon-0136-giggle:

R.A.M.C.63 Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 If chance of wind or rain i would keep them at home, 0 to prove, think y/bs with few races would be better than ur latebreds, jmo Good luck,
