Refused Permission To Erect A Pigeon Loft By Bromford Living Housing Association

Permission for a pigeon loft is hereby refused on the grounds stated below:

The effect of the mess and the traffic of pigeons coming to and from the aviary, also due to the size of the structure, the gardens are not big enough to house this and the scheme is too built up :(

Its rented. I mentioned to the mrs about just putting it up and not saying anything but theres a busy body women 2 doors away that keeps moaning about everything to the housing and getting in to rows with people over things that nowone else would even think twice about, she even tells the kids that they are not allowed to use the pavement outside her house so like the mrs said it wouldnt be long before she runs to the housing grassing about pigeons, anybody no any hitmen, lol.

Housing Associations are usually stricter than councils, many of them will not even allow pets in the house - anything that could potentially annoy neighbours is a no-no

My housing association is quite accommodating the council on the other hand a lot stricter ;)

I think the thing that annoys me most is the way they build the houses so close together without gardens. Then they build what they call play areas which become neglected and attract teenagers who leave litter and rubbish. I often wonder what they want from people because I would have thought they could think a bit further than just putting roofs over people's heads. In these days of unemployment it would be really good if facilities like pigeon lofts, gardens, cycle tracks and the like were in place to help people get something out of their lives other than the tele and the social websites.

Perhaps we should be talking to the Councils along these lines because they seem to be in the Land of Nod.

hi mate take it a step at a time, why dont you seek permission to put up a shed for garden tools etc.then take it from there.you can keep a couple of pair of fancy pigeons in it.

Well about my area you do what ye want when you want and nobody says a word about it. I have 3 lofts, 21x6, 8x6 and 16x8 as well as a wee 6x4 for feeding etc and a 6 foot extension on the end of the 21x6 loft that actually makes it 27x6.

No permission was asked for and no objections have been made.

Think there may be a bit of confusion between Local Authority Planning Permission to erect a garden loft above a certain size, and Local Housing Association Landlord Permission to keep pigeons on their property. Every householder already has the right to erect a shed up to a certain size in their garden - its called Permitted Development and it is to stop Local Authority Planning Departments being inundated with 'trivial' planning requests. So you already have the right to have a shed of sorts, what you don't have is the right to keep pigeons in it as it is not your property - and your Landlord appears to have refused permission to keep pigeons, though their concern is size of loft as it is seen as too big, and the bigger it is the more pigeons there is likely to be, and they are also concerned that they will cause a mess.

Most Missives have a pet or animals clause in them. They are usually a standard wording which reads something like 'permission must be had from (Housing Authority) to keep cats, dogs, rabbits etc. on the property. Such permission will not be unreasonably withheld'. So you need to appeal. Go for a smaller loft (10x6) mention a maximum number of pigeons, point out that they are quieter than a barking dog, will not be sitting around house roofs or entering other peoples gardens, so will not cause any of the nuisance that an ordinary household cat or dog does, and any 'mess' will be wholly within the pigeon loft, and cleaned up twice a day, bagged and binned.

I asked if I was able to have a pigeon loft at the local allotments and they have said no as well, turns out birmingham city council doesn't allow pigeon lofts on any of there allotments. Weve ended up having an allotment anyway cause the mrs likes growing veg and I like flowers and japanese maples and stuff. But it the mrs is taking over that project already, minus all the hard graft of course, lol. When I first moved in to my council house 12 years ago the first thing I did was to ask for permission to have a pigeon loft which I was granted, anyway 9 years later the council turned up out of the blue after I erected another pigeon loft saying someone had complained that I had too many pigeon lofts in my garden. They asked to have a look up the garden which is 100ft x about 30 ft and they told me that I was well in because I was allowed to use 50% of my garden for things like sheds, kennels, pigeon lofts and the like. I was that chuffed I thought it was only right that I gloat and so went straight out and bought another two lofts and erected them in my garden as well. Morale of the study, make sure you know all the facts before you go and run to someone grassing theyve done something you dont like, It could come back and bite you ! ^_^
