Now that the 2012 season is behind us, and the majority of fanciers will have done or planning to split up their pairs. I have just finished splitting my birds up, and all hens will now be confined to the lofts, until due to be paired up next year, the cocks may get their freedom at weekends.

Do you allow your birds to fly out over the winter months, or do you confine them to the loft?

Thank You

Splitting mine next week, then keep them in. May get out on a good day for a bath. Nae point in feeding the Hawks thru the winter

All mine are still together iv put an aviary on my old bird section so I can let them stay in there to have a bath and get the sun and fresh air.. Like henrik said no need to feed the hawks through the winter :animatedpigeons:

My birds are now confined to quarters, next time they will be out free flying , probably February next year. I have aviaries on both racing and stock lofts. Both myself and birds need some respite from B.O.P.

I like the birds to be out on an open loft as much as possible.I enjoy seeing them out and about all day and think they like it as well provided they aren't getting too many unwelcome visitors,I take this as it comes.

Think you lose far fewer to predators over the course of the year if your birds are out all winter than if they spend it locked up.

Most nest boxes are closed now and the birds will be split around Christmas/New Year time.

Andy with the youngsters do you find you get losses after a lock down

sorry for the late reply Buster ,have done the same since i started in 2004 ,i have lost 3 yearling cocks in 8 years ,so yes ,you could say it wasnt a good thing. however i am sure i would have lost many more if i hadnt .

birds split 3 weeks ago, hens out one day cocks out the next and they get open hole when out up till christmas, then spend the next 6 to 8 weeks introducing the hens & cocks i want paired to one another so there is less hastle when the pairing up date arrives. keep it simple n makes my life easier!! haha
