Guest bigda Posted September 25, 2012 Report Posted September 25, 2012 if you can get a rockery built a bit higher than your pond with the water tickle through the stones and at the top of it a house small one that will hide your biological or uva filter what that dose is keep your pond clear of algae there is a product on the market that you add to the water and it makes it crystal clear cant remember the name also you need to keep a check of the pH of the water you control that with a pinch of salt at times.

Novice Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 After taking a year and a half + to dig out my small pond I've finally got a liner and water in it I've been pumping water through a small fountain for 3weeks now what else do I require before I can put gold fish in it filters ect. The pump, filter and uv need to be sized to the capacity of the pond. Before you buy these measure the pond capacity and any stockist will advise you what you need. Remember the fish will grow and pollute more as they do so. If you pay a little extra for a pump it will probably be more efficient than a cheap one and you save on electricity. The parameter you need to measure as your system starts up is ammonia because fish generate this and it is toxic to them.I think Bradshaws sell online and have a web site with advice.I would wait till spring of the year before stocking the pond and only with a couple of fish to start with till the filter starts working.Incidentally I hope the pond is far from the loft as the pigeons would rather drink from the pond on a Saturday than enter the loft.
Guest strapper Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 let your pond mature a little 1st , get some oxygenated weeds in there and if you do put fish in it ..dont put too many in at 1st.

gulkie Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 2ft6" ish 5m x 2mNo out about but is it deep enough to winter fish
peter pandy Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 The pond you have created is roughly 7,500 litres which would require the largest pump from Blagdon at quite considerable expense and may prove needless. My experience of a pond your size would be to place a fountain within and remove over winter. Your fish will require nothing as they will be going into a state of hibernation once the tempreature drops and will stop feeding and the only tip I can give you is never ever overfeed them.
REDROCKET Posted October 3, 2012 Author Report Posted October 3, 2012 No out about but is it deep enough to winter fishThink so got to get a good heater though 2yrs ago the cold weather was freezing ponds at 3ft apparently so there goes the ball in the pond thing. If its going to be to cold the fish will go into the shed with the heater on that's the plan anyway.
