Guest joe_b Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 if iam getting hour half with youngsters round loft and herd so many of yous haveing bad tosses and bop all over place do you think u could still be at top off your raceing just sending them to the race with no tossing love here your thoughts
OLDYELLOW Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 I feel you need to train ybs , mine will be trained up to first race then i stop training , just not worth running the gauntlet everyday and feeding the bops , problem is this if you don't train ybs they get stress when basketed , birds that are regularly been basketed get used to the stress as becomes more normal those that have fed and watered there ybs over night on weekends in there baskets will fair better than those that haven't , banging young birds in to races untrained have to rely on the drag to get them home many don't even leave the liberation site , training just sets them up for racing , ybs should be fit and in good health and no great need to take fat off them , ybs are the future of your loft and should you choose not to put the work in then it will show
greenlands Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 No,sorry mate IMO they require the training, seen some of the local fanciers try it and it's a recipe for disaster.

blaz Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 with only a few tosses yes our 1st race is this week will give yb,s 2 from 10 mile then to race,
geordie1234 Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 It may work for some and not for others there is always exceptions!
marmite Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 they need that training to learn to come out basket and to justsharpen up orientation skills im a lazy ancier but my ybs will have at least 5/6 tosses from 30 ml mind i start them there and keep them there atb clive
Delboy Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 with only a few tosses yes our 1st race is this week will give yb,s 2 from 10 mile then to race, You can do that if your loft is located in main drag.Very few get away with it in the west
OLDYELLOW Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 You can do that if your loft is located in main drag.Very few get away with it in the west birds that follow the main drag are lost when flying out on there own and lack the intelligence to find there own line of flight , these might get lucky but i wouldn't want to bank on them from the distance when there having to fly solo most of the time
Novice Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 They can race with minimal training but must be well basket trained. If you do this you are unlikely to be winning in the first few races but will start to hold your own later.
JohnQuinn Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 if iam getting hour half with youngsters round loft and herd so many of yous haveing bad tosses and bop all over place do you think u could still be at top off your raceing just sending them to the race with no tossing love here your thoughts I can see where you are coming from with your question, whereas you could get away with not training old birds the youngsters need to learn what the basket is all about before sending them racing. Just basket training IMO is not enough but as stated earlier after they have all had a race under their wings you can concentrate on keeping them fit around the loft instead of risking their lives every day in the training basket. Guest homestead Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 lots of members do not fly the first race because of the untrained pigeons that get sent some even miss the second. The price of corn and fuel you dont want to send your well schooled birds to get mixed up in the melay thats caused by birds going round in circles trying to find the line of flight. In other words NO
ALF Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 i would never send any yb's to a race up here without any training suicide in my opinion :emoticon-0127-lipssealed:
yeboah Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Where i live 30 mls north of first drop into gretna where birds split ,eastriggs annan dumfries all break to the west ,langholm to the east only leaving hoddam and lockerbie to come north ,i only ever school my youngsters to just south of ecclefechan (hoddam) which is approx 23mls after they get dragged all over dumfriesshire first race soon sort themselves out and come north on there on ,if they cant they are stupid and not worth worrying about ,never train after there first race for obvious reasons although i did from the 23mls with darkness youngsters first year i tried it and was getting a drop of sixteen plus in three minutes ,most important thing to me by far is there health and condition if that's right everything else is easy to them .
just ask me Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 even a few tosses from 10 mile will help them a lot
