Henrik Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 also j donaldson. d anderson m doran l mitchell are in it old pals act if ur joe.s pal its ok its a jokeNot so much old pals act as you get invited back in if you time your bird in. Joe does a good job running this competition and it creates a good deal of interest in the BHW and is good publicity for the SNFC so unless you can all come up with something better dont knock it.

alex wight Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 J. McNeil 1st section D region, and D Jamieson 2nd section D region turned Joes offer down to take part this year. 3rd section D region has accepted his offer to take part. M Doran 8th section D region has been invited back into the sporting challenge after being runner up in 2010. Joe only asks the first 3 of each section to take part, if they turn it down then no-one will represent that section. He doesnt continue down the list till he gets 3 representatives. Hope this helps. Regards alex.
eastcoaster Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 It`s his competition so its upto him ! it`s only a bit of fun anyway ,
Blue Tooner Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 also j donaldson. d anderson m doran l mitchell are in it old pals act if ur joe.s pal its ok its a joke Jim Donaldson is not in it this year but was in it last year after winning section G in 2009. Joe sends a letter out to the first 3 in each section inviting them to take part, some choose not to enter, others don't even bother to reply. We got invited into it by letter from Joe after finishing 8th region G. in 2008. Gordon Willox had 2 pigeons before me in that race, Jim Donaldson had 3 and they both decided not to take up Joe's invite. We were lucky enough to win it in 2009 which meant we were invited back in last year. We are in it again this year after finishing 8th region G due to the fact that some of the fanciers who finished ahead of us in the section result did not want to enter. The work that Joe put's into his sporting challenge is immense and has to be applauded, how he keeps it going with all the flak he get's is testimony to his desire to promote long distance pigeons in Scotland.KEEP IT UP JOE, THE VAST MAJORITY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO.
go go Posted May 8, 2011 Author Report Posted May 8, 2011 Down here in region d it does look like the old pals act because the guys in 4th region certainly never got a letter, the question i am asking is how are there only 2 from region d in it?

Reply 10 is from the man himself. I visited Joe today to see how he is recovering from his operation. He was busy planting all his bedding plants into pots, something he loves doing, just like his pigeons. He asked me about this subject, and i didnt want to discuss it as i knew he would be hurt by all the negative talk about him. I tried to keep talking about other things, than this. Joe has made some enemies, but more friends through life. You either like him or you dont. If there are people who want answers (even tho they are here to be read), then speak to man himself. He did say that if anyone has any questions that need answered he would gladly do so. Why is it people that arent involved in this, that are doing all the chanting. Shouldnt it be the people that are being effected that should be asking the questions? As bluetooner and others have stated, Joe has done, and is doing, an immense amount of work for the sport, and to be knocked like this is not acceptable. So to the people that need answers and arent happy with what has been said, contact joe himself, i,m sure he would oblige. Regards alex wight (yes, a friend of Joe Murphys)
tiger Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 lets get one thing straight i dont have a problem with joe

Regards alex wight (yes, a friend of Joe Murphys) Excellent post Alex and one that i would fully back, have known Joe for 20 odd years and his work within promoting good Scottish pigeons is outstanding, surpassing any other scribe in Scotland and for that matter the UK, and as for his Sporting challenge competition it has been that successful over the last decade that it has now spread to Ireland and England. Keep up the good work Joe :scotland:
dkj Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Below is what Joe said last year: m now in my 8th year of coordinating the Sporting Challenge, which was first created to help promote the sport of pigeon racing within Scotland, with the main purpose being to have a one bird nomination competition emerging between fanciers that compete against each another in the SNFC Gold Cup race from Reims with their nominated birds. The highest placed bird on the open result becomes the outright winner of the sporting challenge. The selection for entry into the challenge is I ask the first 2 fanciers in each of the 7 regions from the previous year’s Gold Cup race if they wished to partake in the sporting challenge. Out of the 22 people asked only 14 fanciers are prepared to take up the challenge. The previous year's winner is always asked back to defend the trophy and I’m happy to say that Maskame & Mackie from Peterhead have accepted this year’s challenge and they are going for the ‘Double’ with their very good blue cock Richmond Maverick. Last year we again experienced a very hard race with only Richmond Maverick being the only bird on the open result and many good pigeons did not make it home. The other invites went to my Fancier of the Year Dennis Anderson of Annan and the runner up turned down the invitation. Like last year I have again given the fanciers the opportunity of introducing a reserve pigeon in the event of them loosing their original candidate. This was well received last year although it was more work for me I have found it very interesting compiling the information on all these wonderful pigeons.
