Guest fatpat Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Have just spotted my first ever red kite here in northern ireland, they look to be very fast birds, could they take a racing pigeon from around the loft ?
Guest Freebird Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 I would say probably not. Definetely not if they are relocated.

ovy1255 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 LIBERATED IN DERWENT VALLEY next to me -two or three above lofts at times ,frightens the birds but never seen them even try to attack----too slow and told these are scavengers --makes the younguns exercise .
ginge Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 theres quite a few in leeds, they are massive but did think they were fast at all, more big n daft lol, they dont take pigeons ,there not fast enough,my mate feeds em chicken, they swoop and take it,pretty good to watch
billt Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Have just spotted my first ever red kite here in northern ireland, they look to be very fast birds, could they take a racing pigeon from around the loft ?As has been said they are not fast and live on carrion and are no threat to pigeons
THE FIFER Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 think pigeons are safe enough regarding them, although i notice the birds having a good look at them when around
Guest Owen Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 They are known to rob Peregrine Falcons of their kills in the air.

OLDYELLOW Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Have just spotted my first ever red kite here in northern ireland, they look to be very fast birds, could they take a racing pigeon from around the loft ?there scavengers so pigeons would only be on the menu if a carcass is left by other bops or road kill
tommy2 Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 You have no worries with those weaklings, they cannot survive for long without human intervention, its pathetic, most are having to be fed each day.
greenlands Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 You have no worries with those weaklings, they cannot survive for long without human intervention, its pathetic, most are having to be fed each day.Correct Tommy, another RSPB cock up.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Have just spotted my first ever red kite here in northern ireland, they look to be very fast birds, could they take a racing pigeon from around the loft ? we have one that has always been here and flies around the car park and very close to the lofts, the young birds were a bit wary of it when they first came out but soon got used it as it was no threat but it is a lovely bird to see around the place
billt Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Modern farming does not suit the Kite, farmers are not allowed to leave fallen stock on the field they can't compete with the Buzzard for road kills as you say there are feed centres around not good at the moment with the amount of snow we have as they prefer to snatch and go rather than land, Their best feed at the moment is at the nearest abattoir where they have access to the offal bins
Guest bakes Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 only way they do damage to your bird is if it already dead red kites are scavengers take carrion dead rotting meat i would worry more about goshawks, sparrow hawk hens and pergrines there the main problems pigeon fanciers have to contend with when birds are iver loft flying or coming back from training or race only ever seen one red kite and that was when i was down wales abergavenny other year with few terrier lads i no big birds up our way its pergrines, goshawks, sparrowhawks and stack load of buzzards about all best.
Guest fatpat Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Thanks for your replys gents, just have to worry about the rest of the crap thats after my pigeons then !
Roland Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Thanks for your replys gents, just have to worry about the rest of the crap thats after my pigeons then ! That sums it up. No problem at all to your birds.... May take an injured small bird, but other than that .... nowt but dead carrion.
Guest bluemorning Posted December 26, 2010 Report Posted December 26, 2010 pigeons safe with kites.they prefer carrion.its the shape of kites that spooks them, same as when a kestrel appears not going to harm pigeons. but my birds tend to fly first ask questions later.
