bad luck...was it their first trainer ?

If you are unlucky enough to get hit on the first training toss then I reckon losses will be massive. If you are lucky enough to get them a good few then you have a better chance of more making it home when you do get hit. Just got to keep fingers crossed I guess!

I have three tosses over and have lost 2 each toss. Second toss i had 42 up and all came broken up throughout the day. Unfortunatley hawks are everywhere and i think it is pot luck when you liberate and you have got to hope they get a clean run home. Once you get 4-6 tosses things normally settle down with the birds catching on that they have to get home quickly.

P.S I hope all the young missing on this thread work in, they somtimes surprise you. Eamon

Without sounding too harsh, its hardly surprising you lads are getting hit. These birds are in the peak of their breeding season with the young at their most demanding, and your filling the air with inexperienced dinners on wings. Why are people training their YBs now, what is the rush. If you are and want too then take a few "spares" and let them go first.

Mick, i always take "Spares".

Fine taking 'Spares'. But like the unlucky 'Third Light' this could could have a unwarrented effect.

I, personally, would still give the 'Lard /Salt treatment to ALL my birds being released.

You cannot give 100% protection to any of your birds, but all you can do is give them a bit of help and reduce the percentages.

Its time that all the pigeon fanciers in the british isles, started to realise that this problem affects EVERY fancier who races his birds and not just a "chosen" few. The chances are every fancier has lost birds to BOP.Its ok to send your birds and then moan or even give up, but its just another hazard pigeon fanciers have to face, along with all the others, but there are ways to help the problem. Fanciers have to change their ways and attitudes, and do their bit. Lets face it would we let our birds go just a few yards from pylons? I doubt it, but i remember well being told by an old fancier about when the electric infrastructure as we know it started to appear, fanciers had to change and so did the birds. He even said that while sending them on the train, one particular place always incurred losses. It wasnt until he went on the train he found out that in 2 directions pylons and wires were apparent.

Every situation with this problem is fixable, but its a case of time, patience and observation. Do your home work, and be prepared to loose a few, but thats nothing new.

I can also say that i for one believe that the salt/lard thing is a waste of time, i have never seen one recorded (with evidence) case that it works, and anyway why waste yopur money on salt! ;)

Yep other than salt may well be better.

But salt was the very most effective means used prior to the wars. Also any and all carrion found in fields / by ways etc. was also doused well with salt. For B.O.P. are oppertunist and DO eat carrion when available.

Pain killing capsules broken down, Aspro etc. all may very well be more effective. Doesn't matter a jot as long as it is used.

But Hawks / B.O.P. don't drink water. They get their fluids from the victims blood.

But agree with Mick EVERYONE should be doing their bit! Even a little via ALL concerns would a worthwhile remedy that would quickly put this plight into reasonable prospective.

THE REASON WE HAVE JUST STARTED IS BECAUSE OUR FIRST RACE IS IN JUST UNDER 4 WEEKS [TO EARLY] AND WITH THE WEATHER UNPREDICTABLE MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES :):)
