Dont know what year it was, I think around 1996/7, the temperature was minus 27 in Scotland. My loft was in the middle of a field and when I changed the frozen water in loft, the time i was ready to leave the water had frozen up again. I had birds sitting on small ybs, no nest felts, no electric and no heaters. Never lost a yb, in fact the down on ybs was fantastic. A brilliant team of ybs were bred, gaining top prizes every time they were raced.

the coldest I remember it being was in 1982 - when it was -17 where I lived - but I didn't have pigeons then - the pipes froze inside the house on a warmer day (-12 ) and burst while I was at work (shrug)

I was a teenager with a morning & evening newspaper delivery round then, basically started snowing in November and freeze continued till early April?

There was a more recent one, 1980's, remember a nightshift week with 5 main line railways in Scotland blocked  by snow, and when west coast main line through Lockerbie was re-opened, clearance left sheer walls of ice on either side of the line, that were taller than the trains.

Cold now, but no comparison.
