kev01293 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 i would just like to ask what u do with strays that enter your loft? i get some that only take a drink and then take off but others that are flown out which i keep overnight and feed/water em then release em next morning but if they stay i usually take em a couple of miles away from the loft and release em knowing that theyve been fed/watered and should be able to get back back home under their own steam some of these strays come back to my loft and refuse to leave but when i report them all i get is the usual excuses such as do u want to keep it as its well bred or i cant afford to send for it,etc i like to think that if one of my birds enters somebodys loft that they will feed/water it and then report it to me if it doesnt leave their loft under its own steam but going by some fanciers reactions recently im beginning to think that im doing something wrong-what do u think? kev

thunderboult Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 i'll report them straight away, if they want to send for it they can, if they don't want to send/can't afford to send i'll take em up the road and release. done it with a yb a few days ago and she got back home ok. i think it's to much trouble for some people. and i've also heared of people killing them to cut down on the competition(if they're carring a gold ring/rhonfried) i could'nt believe i(i can believe it because of seen so many stunts pulled these days) but it's not something i could do.

OLDYELLOW Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 all depends on bird sometimes ive got a handfull of corn and put bird down with it and a drink and there away , gbs i report nehu and shu /su i report and usualy take them 86 miles to Sunderland and liberate them but i try to get most birds back home even if means putting them on the transporter on basketing night
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I never let strays mix with my own birds They're fed and watered - and reported - as they're not usually wing stamped most are then tossed within a reasonable distance of home - but there are many ungrateful ignorant fanciers out there who couldn't give a t*ss about their birds
Guest Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 feed water and if in a fit state release if not report them and with the owners consent get them as close to home as possible and release from lorrys after building them up first do unto others birds as you would wish done to yours ;) ;)

Even after the owners contacts us we still try and find the easiest way for them to get the bird back.
gazza1 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 i made a 280 mile round trip to collect a youngster on friday reckon it mixed with mid week flight...it was my bird therefore my responsibility to collect or send for..as the couple who found it had no experience of birds i collected and dropped a nice bottle of wine in as a thank you.. my bird my expense
Roland Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Light Feed and water.... into a Hospital Cage o it's own. If looking good a few miles up the road and released. If not, report first thing.
Guest HighSpeedLofts Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 i report young birds right away as its only a young one and any young ones can make mistakes its allready made a mistake by coming in to your loft no point feeding it and tossing it out hoping it will find its own way home it needs to go straight back to its loft not in another 10 before it getsd there with old ones they get there chance to clear thesels after feeding and if they keep coming back il report it

Guest HighSpeedLofts Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 when i get strays they are isolated fed watered and reported straight away would you kill it if the owner asked u to
Guest Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I report as last resort if its possible to find out through ring list then contact owner and put bird in shed of its own and nurse until well then up it goes unless asked to keep for courier, under no circumstances will I ever kill a bird, that to me is the job of the owner not the finder.
Guest numpty01 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 it depends on the fancier who has youer bird sometimes they look after it then get there *expletive removed* out and throw them out me i would keep till they are ready to arrange collection
BLACK W F Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I THINK ITHINK I THINK YOUR RIGHT MAV BUT GOT THE PLACE WRONG I THINK IT IS Mr BINGHAM WHAT YOU THINK MAV GETTING CLOSE
gooner Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 would you kill it if the owner asked u to no i would not i would tell him that i will give it to a new starter
John k Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 If wing stamped or tel digits on plastic ring call the fancier etc etc, keep bird on its own water and feed discuss with owner what he wants me to do with bird... 9 out of 10 then get one the drivers (Haulage) if he is passing toss bird as near as poss to owners abode so far this yr i have done this with x amount of strays i have had in and as far as i know all but 1 have had them all back..........Two fanciers offered me x amount for my troubles which i declined and another fancier asked me to send him a couple of 2010 rings and he will breed me some young birds out of is stock birds which was a kind gesture i thought.....
little sam Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 If i get a Scottish pigeon in i will remember that mate
