what i done for years is to wean your youngbirds into a basket/training crate, they will learn to feed and drink in there before putting them into the loft and they will never forget and never be frieghtened of the basket.

Hi Jim,I have a basket in the young bird loft all the time. When I first put the birds through I leave the front open so the birds can go in and out as they please, throw some black rape in now and then just to tice them in when required.I also put the drinkers on the ouside of the basket and remove the main loft drinker. That way they are not frightened of the basket and know where the drinkers are.Once they are use to doing what i want I shut the front and only open it when i want them to go in it for training, once again a little black rape gets them in.Lindsay

i put them in the basket as earlly as possible and leave them outside the loft then put hamper up on landing board they drop in through holes then i go 10 feet back they fly  to landing board in throuh trap what i would say about weaning them off in a basket is id be afraid they bond to the basket before the loft and i think the first bond shoud be to the loft

anyone got any tips on Basket Training young birds, what I mean is introducing basket to the birds putting them in it for the first time.

i would tend to basket ybs at a very early age , even when weaning ,, just a few at a time , leaving the basket out in the sunshine ;D? [hopefully],,,,,, with a drinker on it,, seeing them sit in fresh shavings ,, seems to calm them for later   basketing training stage,, at this time , i would feed them in the loft,, basket them shortly after,, then let them hear the sound of the water splashing into the drinkers,, they soon drink then,, i feel, the more times their basketed, fed and watered,  the calmer they become,,,i feel it is very important to learn young birds, most things,  at a very early stage  [pigeons never forget :)]

few weeks before training i leave open basket in loft birds come in and out of it young cocks fight over it.One or two days i basket all youngbirds and leave in garden. Then release back into loft after a few hours.Thats all i do.I dont want birds to like the basket just not be scared of it.

EVERY YEAR I WEAN MY YOUNGESTERS INTO A LARGE PANNIER THE QUICKER THE BETTER FROM NEST TO PANNIER FOR AT LEAST A WEEK THERE NOT LONG IN GOING TO WATER THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF SCARING THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THEM PUTTING THEM STRAIGHT INTO THE RACING BASKET  :-/ :-/ :-/

I'd put an open basket in the loft with a good fill  of straw, and throw a bit of seed in the straw. When you go in loft straw should be all over the floor!! Later on i do the same with a drinker on and remove their own drinker so they have to go in basket to drink.

we put our ybs in the basket every sat morning when ob racing starts,

the drinkers are put on but no water, about 12oclock we sprinkle food

in the drinkers and with them abit hungry we find they eat through the

bars pretty quick, once they have had the food we then top up the drinkers

with the water.this works for us :)

the first time my youngsters see a basket is there first training toss dose,nt do them no harm .

with due respect robbie,, in my opinion, yb,s must be learned quickly to drink when in the basket,,yb,s deheydrate very quickly , it maybe ok in a short toss, but in a race, basketed overnight, for the first time, will have difficulty in finding the drinker,, therefore be at a big dis-advantage in dehydrating , when flying home, ,, i personaly think this is one of the reasons for some  yb losses    i would place priority in learning them to drink, with confidence,  all they need, from the basket drinker :) hope you dont mind me saying this robbie , but past experience has prooved this  for me [to my own dis-advantage]

yes jimmy i know what you mean when i train my young i nearly always put a drinker on the side of the basket i also chuck in a few handful of small seeds in to them to learn them there always left for 10-15 minutes before letting them go also i,m sure walter would agree my youngsters are never scared or jumpy going in to the race basket and i dont lose anymore than anybody else . ;) ;)

to me this is the way i am going to do it missed my 1st round as was told to late about it the only thing that's not hear is let them see and hear you putting water in pouring in slow will definitely be doing next round. if the ybs dont drink in basket you have lost before you have started. FACT ;)

yes, robbie,, , i see what your meaning now :) i certainly meant no harm, in my post :) [im sure youll know that :)] yes , its allways a good idea to take the basket drinker with you, whilst training yb,s, and a bottle of water, even if they dont take a drink, they will soon know where the water is,, merely by hearing the splashing, :)

the main reason for my post was , that many [ill add many, many ;D]  years ago, on a very  warm day, i basketed my yb,s , then spent time collecting other members birds [having a chat , with each member :)] but b4 realizing it,, these birds were in the basket, with no water, for over 5 hours, they would have normally taken 3/4 of an hour to do this distance , they , in fact arrived in dribbles and drabbles after about 2 hours, losing some :(,,,,,,,with dried  mud up to their bodies, lesson learned :) never again :)

agree with greenlands, wean them to the yb loft and have the basket with the door down so they can go in and out as they wish....and be fed and watered in the basket too... :)
