Guest IB Posted December 29, 2008 Report Share Posted December 29, 2008 Well I've 8 spare hens this year, previously hens have paired and raced, but I'd like to try jealousy in 2009 with 4 cocks and 8 hens. I've a bank of 4 new boxes, for 2008's young cocks (not yet introduced into them) and a pen for 8 birds next to it. Any suggestions on how I should go about this? Exercised daily / trained a few times a week. A few tosses back to the widowhood boxes, then they race to the boxes on race day (only time they go to their boxes cocks) when on form, they will be there / beat your cocks week in week out. Gaz Jennings Posted December 29, 2008 Report Share Posted December 29, 2008 can u explain this sytem a little more mate thanks Basically what you have to do is have for arguments sake a 12ft loft(dosnt have to be this size) that houses 20 hens.Make 10 widow boxes for the 20 hens,split the shed into 3 sections,10 hens in 1 section and 10 hens in the other section,in the middle section is where the hens will trap when they return from exercise and racing.Let 10 cocks pick there pens in the middle section and when pairing up allow the 10 hens from the first section to pair to the 10 cocks,not letting the other 10 into the middle section at all.Once the first section have reared there young seperate them and allow the cocks to remain in there on there own for a week or 2.Now let the 2nd section into the middle section and let them pair to the cocks and rear a round of YBs. You now have 20 hens racing to 10 boxes and cocks.Move the cocks out of the middle section and when exercising allow the hens into the widow box with the door closed.Feed them in the middle section at all times and never have the 2 sections out at the same time.When training give 15 mins difference between the 2 sections again feed and move to there designated section. On basketing there are many different motivational tricks you can play on these hens, ie letting both sections in together, locking 1 hen in the box and allow the other into the middle section(with or without cocks it dosnt matter). This i have found to be a very good system with some good results, i have 14 hens and between them(not inc 08 birds they have over 25 x 1st,with one hen winning 12 x 1st alone) also 8th NW sec 37th open MNFC Yearling Falaise ,2008 -1172 birds.very hard race. 6 sent. 7th NW sec 27th open yearling MNFC Falaise,2007 another very hard race. 3 sent. 10th sec C 50th open MCCFC sending 2 birds 2007.Picauville. 6 sent 59th NW sec , 207th open - 6431 birds. 6 sent. I would race them unpaired the most part. Put a single cut down cock in the section and let him pair to any hen. Make sure the only place a nest can be built is on the floor, put V perches in the section to discourage the other hens from pairing, if they try to pair on the floor the pair that are nesting will drive them back up to their perches. They'll exercise like you wouldn't believe, talk to them and play with them and they'll surprise you racing too. When the longer races come round pair them to your young cocks.
