mart Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 When would you recomend doing your old pigeons? before you pair them up or after. also do you vaccinate every year or just as young pigeons? thanks
BLACK W F Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 every year for param i am going to do my old birds just shortly for parat after i have treated them with baytril
ch pied Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 anyone thinking of doing a vacc for sam & ella , would do well to make sure they have a treatment with a sulpha drug like : cosumix , furaltadone , theraprim , trimsulpha , or an anti-biotic like amoxicillian or baytril , at the correct dose . the bird's must be clean before they are vacc . then again you could go-ahead and be lucky & get away without the pre -treatment . OR un-lucky and have very big prob's . JMO
Guest Owen Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 ch pied I am glad you said what you did. It is really important that the birds are clear of the disease before you start. It is also critical that the birds are rested after the antibiotic treatment and before the vaccination. You would ruin the the effects of the vaccination if there were any of the antibiotic in their systems. I always treat my birds with multivits and probiots after the antibiotic treatment and the vaccinations. It has got to the stage that the race baskets are pools of infection. We can not afford to not to vaccinate. And it is vital that all the birds on your property are done to avoid harbouring carriers.
Roland Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Yes owen, I believe, - and a very good Avian said more - that 1 out of three birds / lofts are infected with such or similar strains of devilment like samonella. Unfortunately many are 'Carriers and too many fanciers don't realise their birds have it , let alone check for ... So will obviously never treat. Prevention is fine, but no way fool proof, and one must stay on top. Injected birds can still be affected, or become carriers.
the dude Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 owen is right you must also give immune booster for 4 days prior to injection livimun is agood one hope this helps
Guest chrisss Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 its sounds like a plan, but can some one describe what they do from the start to finish?
Kyleakin Lofts Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I raised this subject a short time ago under a different heading. Fanciers seem to have very different views on this matter, ie. whether to vaccinate or not. I contacted Auchincruive regarding it and the vet there said he did not think it was a problem in the UK, but put me on to a pigeon vet for further investigation. I have not yet been in touch with him. As another train of thought; prior to vaccination, a course of antibiotics is required to clear any disease already present, then boosting the system with multivits and rest. If this is carried out successfully, what benefit does one then have by vaccinating the birds? I presume the pre-treatment would be required annually prior to vaccination, so why not just pre-treat and monitor?

Guest IB Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I raised this subject a short time ago under a different heading. I contacted Auchincruive regarding it and the vet there said he did not think it was a problem in the UK, but put me on to a pigeon vet for further investigation. I have not yet been in touch with him. Posted similar for over a year now in response to people who don't have figures to back up their statements that 'every loft has paratyphoid present'. The people who do have the figures, DEFRA and SAC (Auchincruive), say different, in fact they say there's no problem in UK, in domestic or wild birds. Again I've raised questions elsewhere about this so called antibiotic treatment prior to vaccination. The favourite appears to be Parastop and its given purely and simply because those that use it believe it to be performance enhancing. If salmonella had been present, then the bird would develop antibodies against it. Antibiotic may clear the bacteria, but the antibodies remain. Vaccinate when antibodies are present and the vaccine likely won't take (read your pmv vaccine leaflet about affects of presence of antibodies for confirmation of this (maternal antibodies). And isn't paratyphoid vaccine required every 6 months?
