January will see them on the wing in February. ....weeks and weeks before you are due to race....this may give you problems with losses around the loft when they are ranging etc and if you have a small team it can be a bit demolarising. Also the feeding bill will be higher and as you pointed out the weather is sh**.....its not a rule so you can do what you want but it's not really about winning in your start year more about learning and keeping hold of they ybs....Would you be better getting some yearling stock and breeding your own?

Try to get yer birds elsewhere would be my advice....not cos they would be sh** but maybe January not the right month for a novice to be rearing young

It may be you need to add more than just barley to your regular mix. I use linseed and hemp along with a moulting mix . Barley is the last thing eaten and I get a bit peeved at flinging it oot lol

Stock birds just eat and feed ybs......mine only do any work from January to March the rest of the time they are on perches taking the p*ss.... I don't give their condition a second thought outside the given months.... Sweating pigeons! That's what yer after

No for me Derek. ....I like the fact the stick can be pushed into the aviary and cleaned out...nae risk of losing or leaving nests. It's just much easier
