Sammy, could you PM me please?

I usually only post a lot of drivel which amuses me, but very few others think it is funny. I like to think it is too intelligent for them, but that would in turn make me a supercilious old fart, so I don't think that the drivel and humour is too intelligent for them to prevent myself becoming a supercilious old fart. This will be why you don't often read enough of my posts. :D

Happy birthday.

Good morning all.

They are a good forum for the interchange of ideas, help and advice. They promote a social structure between fanciers from all over. They can be allowed to develop into areas for personal abuse. Sometimes the typed word is easily misconstrued and offence can be taken when the typist had no intent of this whatsoever. I think if they are well run sites, then they provide a platform for more good than harm.

The rule of pigeon racing is that there is no rule other than "Many roads lead to Rome".

Thanks for posting some of the old remedies. They were and still are effective, more importantly costing very little and sometimes nothing. They are often, if checked, supported by science. The modern remedies, in my opinion, are the ones costing money and being advertised. Some are completely useless and tend only to satisfy the fancier. Nothing is won from out of a bottle, but often bottles tend to placate the fancier and make him feel she is doing his part. There are some very effective modern remedies that "do what it says on the bottle" and quickly. It is this time that is sometimes of essence.

I don't race YB's and I have never had YBS, or have I? When I first started pigeons were coming from everywhere and I had an outbreak of illness, going light. I was given a product, later found to be an antibiotic, to use and the pigeons recovered within days. The ill YB's had heavy canker deposits on their beaks. I never suffered from anything like this again. On rare occasions of bringing in new stock, I had occasional YB's that looked a bit "under the weather", but this never amounted to much and they threw it off by themselves. Nothing like the reported YBS. This year I have brought some YB's in and again I have suffered illness, this time having to remove some of the ill pigeons. Some others looked "under the weather", but have made a recovery on their own. Does the previous paragraph indicate normal loft upset due to the new pigeons and an upset to the loft ecology or does it indicate very mild attacks of YBS? I have read several fanciers and their opinions in regard to injections, YBS, etc and I really don't know the answer to my own question. What I do know is that it is better to err on the side of safety, so I would conclude that I have suffered mild occasional bouts of YBS within my loft, brought on by the introductions disturbing the ecology of the loft. If I am correct, I am not a candidate for Ian's survey and because of these doubts, I have not sent for one. I read the thread with interest and some mild humour. I believe in a lot of the old methods and enjoy listening to Roly and the likes to enable myself to pick up on them, but I also appreciate that with modern illnesses, sometimes modern methods are required. The old methods are slow to work and are more about prevention and the creation of an ecology that produces high resistance. When that is attacked by some of the modern virulent strains of illness that are circulating nowadays, the only effective method is a modern one.

Roly has posted his methods on several occasions. He may so do again. Lime in the water, onions hanging in the loft, I believe they have to be cut open to draw the impurities, etc. I am sure, Stevie, that your dad will be aware of a few of these methods as they were the old fashioned methods.
-
Roly, I thought you used the old fashioned methods. Lime in water, etc, etc. However if you do not wish my silly endorsement then I shall remove it. Stevie you are incorrect, quality racers are not the only exceptions. Roly is one of the exceptions, but does not want to be regarded as a quality racer.

Well recognised Stevie.

Quite correct Walter, but the SHU do issue him with seals to use after his work is completed and as such they are authorising him to carry out this service and giving approval for the subsequent use of the clock. They stop short of recommending the service he provides because of the fact that Unikon would not entertain the system after it has been "tampered" with.
-
Be aware, this would have to be approved by your Union. The SHU have issued seals and approved this person to carry out this work.

Good morning all.

Back to my previous post. This is the way it is done in my club. When I assign rings I give a printout to the fancier and however many copies they require dependant on how many clubs of which they are members.
-
Check with Neil A, he used to use it.
-
With the Benzing system, every electronic ring is issued with an identification number. When you enter the pigeon to the race this number is recorded with the pigeon entered. When you time the pigeon, the identification number is also recorded. No two rings have the same identification number assigned to them. At the start of the season the Secretary is issued with the ring list for every loft by the person who assigned the rings, if it was not the Secretary that performed that task.

Looks good, well done.
