  1. Good debate … probably. But can't blame the weather, nor the race control etc. Most need to look in the mirror! they decided! Feds etc. change days of release … A day before or After etc. A. Whatever happened to a few days hold overs? B. Bringing back the birds etc. - Not saying one way or the other regards what the weather may or may not have been! I'll tell you A. it doesn't suit the fanciers. B. The fanciers would be up in arms for the Thursday after race!!! the fanciers wants it every way and which . Yes own ends and likes. I've know Nationals to be way over a week... and brought back! daren't happen to day... One wants to send on a wing and a prayer and Blame ……… Personally I never looked at the clouds as to sending, or I'd never have sent. but I./ we all today have forecasts galore... why the blame... When trying to please you all

    Amazing

Truly amazing. Taken from another site and posted by 'Misty'! I agree 100% as often spouted .. ok and a lot more. Quote '...……… What amazes me more is that they constantly moan about the same things year in year out but never make any intelligent approach to solving them, they use the same methods year on year and get the same results. Many fanciers appear to have problems with their YBs now. You cannot expect a sick pigeon to perform, when under the same circumstances humans would be in bed on medication! Nor does it make sense not to, or attempt to. Find out the cause rather than have to treat.(I say Better still think why! then Because Roly). In my opinion going clinical, as I said 40 years ago was a big mistake, nothing ruins the immune system faster, preventative medication also ruins the immune system, animals have to overcome health problems to improve the immune system. Keeping expensive stock pigeons on preventative medication has also not helped covering up potential health problems which are then passed onto their offspring who are treated the same, until you come to those that are actually raced, several miles down the road from actual healthy pigeons. But then why worry if you can send your pigeons down the road and complain, complain, complain????????. If not so surreal one would laugh eh! He also wrote which I endorse 100% ' ….I feel pigeons are lost for a number of reasons, firstly they are not good enough in the first place, they have been subjected to artificial treatment and are not healthy, dehydration in the transportation, raptors, weather conditions, treated like robots etc; But if one fancier can have 90% returns it cannot just be luck, one should look at the methods of those that do not lose their pigeons every year. It is far easier to ruin a first class pigeon than get the best out of a lesser one.
  3. Well 'making a Comparison' eh! Nigh all of us/you have taken a couple of baskets or so and let off separately! Is it not true the differences in homing is stupendous! Last basket home way before the first release. First lot nicely backt … Then the second loft a disaster or n … Yes unbelievably differences. Right, that isn't it! On race days, one fed has high returns. Over the border 3-50 miles, whatever, a disaster etc. etc. One thing for sure we never know, or ever will it seems to know the first jot of the sport. We have a good run, then do the same and have a disastrous run. All within minutes. Yesteryear bird, in reality, overall were far superior Losses far, far less — velocities etc. at least on par. Birds not home race night were next morning or so. Ok climates are different.150.000 fanciers sent far fewer birds than the 23.000 today. Homing ability shot to pieces mostly today/ Culls bred to be lost. Time we looked at the problem and see how much is our fault! I'll give examples, Worming regularly whether needed or not. Canker treated usually… with the same remedy causing deep-rooted infections that can't be removed (Well can, but dozens of other things are treated instead!. Yeah ok So and So advertises that '....' and has no problems. Of course not, probably never sees it, let alone does it! Mind he gets his 'Name' in lights and money in the bank! Yes, of course, the raptures have a lot to answer for. Mind, again who don't didn't act when the time was/is to be. But the truth is Raptures are only responsible for far fewer numbers given to them. But you know, regardless of what one knows, they will carry on doing the same.
  4. Would say if its worth a try, then start at club level, then other clubs to Federation proposals … already 95% have packed up I'd wager. A few lone voices in the wilderness will often mean more good and genuine fanciers leaving the sport! J.M.O.
  5. They have same day races in Belgium for instance. They have their fair share losses too. How true. Never ever seen common sense prevail in this so - called sport yet! So one says that a few hours lost travelling same day could/would be good... then also say the birds need all the sunlight that they need in other races. I.e. the old birds distance racing scenario. 'They need that extra half hour' … but then the fact is they don't. Also often get held back far more time wise. Simple reality of happenings, as every season proves, is much that much said this time of year, spouted and put forward.... Mind never at club meetings, let alone Federation meeting Lo and heavens forbid regards National meetings / races, for it is quickly shield away from and dies a forlorn death. What have we to lose! Nothing for it will be the same losses next season.

We/I remember a few who tried to put forward a decent regime regards the problem. First off, Bilco gave tremendous thoughts and ability in this regards. Said, and it would have been, the RSPB GETTING around the table... they certainly won't or need to now. Several more too. Even on here a few, and right well renowned fancier tried to form a body to make our position known.../ would cost about ~ JUST £10 per fancier donation if they so wanted. Would employ a 'Think Tank' and a voice for the media too. A penny a bird to the cause at club and Fed level! Per usual it was so-call pigeon member who fought against it. Bemoaned and even wrote letters to the B.H.W. decrying it, and put forward reasons why 'THEY' didn't want as such... Plus much more reason/ideas spouted on here regularly! Yet! Yet! yet unbelievably it was the very moaners regard their losses that were at the forefront denouncing a way forward. Alternatively, at least one where they support EVEN if not getting off the backsides to help! You couldn't make it up! Personally I would be only too pleased to feed them. Even embellish a nice flavour for them!

Sorry Philgo, never said, or indeed never implied you are or were confusing. We can't control the wind ... only harness our sails. I was the further flyer, only one this way and in a not so good location. So maybe the odd swallow was a privilege. But we can only play with the cards we are dealt. Mind, we are in control of how we play them. Further, we know, many don't take into account that the pigeon will fly in valleys when appropriate. Not bragging, but proud, I guess. I took six birds first time in the basket. 3- 4-year-olds. Midway through the season. It was the first time I'd sent. Member tried to take a rise out of me. Then I was asked if I was going to send the birds overseas next week in the Midland national. I said no. With tongue in cheek, they implied that I knew it would be a waste of time as my birds weren't good enough. I smiled and said to Bill the foremost to pick a bird out of the basket, which they mocked. I state ANY and would wager against them ... That never happened either, maybe as I had never lost a wager before. So he took out a blue hen and said 'Will this his one do'? I repeated 'You choose'. I sent it, the only one I sent actually. It did well 18th. Had a nice write up in the BHW how confident I was etc. and how well the pigeon done second time in the basket etc. etc.
  10. Let me give you contras here, Jackie. Was at Frank Tasker's loft one day... with some mates from overseas, but won't brag names, suffice to show what many hear and what they do. Frank was saying simply that Arthur Beardsmore was the very best for conditioning a bird for a specific race. Indeed said even just one bird for a particular race and winning it. Anyway, I smiled. Frank used to send 200 odd to a national! It was often said, friendly or not, at that marking station he ought to have a conveyer belt for the baskets. That day Frank had sent 79 youngsters to a race. Was stating he wanted to clock them all in before another fancier even had one. Consciences! Maybe... To sell pigeons certainly. Now in practice who has the better name, more renowned? Arthur Beardsmore by a long shot! Did he send masses to a race? No! I know of four renowned fanciers who moved to a location before being heard of! Would you believe to the east! Yes, the same ones that would argue that location mean nothing! Yeah right. One told many including our club that from an ok flyer to a great was BECAUSE he moved to Skegness. Now I know of the four that moved lofts a couple more times even for an advantage. Ok, they say otherwise. Know another very well breeder racer fancier that had twice bought land further up the valley to get the first drop when others flew a few corners. The mob flyer brags how good his birds are! But seldom packs and has a great many drops together. That only happens when a loft is in excellent condition, or the flock is as good as it gets. I used to pack well... but often well behind. I asked Gary Edmunds if he would help me pair up. The very best flyer I've ever met or known. He asked me 'Why'! I replied to breede youngsters! He again asked why! Still great friends, but a bit miffed. So I asked another very good proven fancier - who had his first birds off my dad... He soon learnt a swallow does make summer with them. Anyway, maybe more of that later. So I asked Barry the same question and told him what his nephew had said. Very diplomatically, he said the same and then explained. 'Roly' he said, 'Your birds go training with mine, Gary never trains (A fact his birds had two trainers as y/b's. One 20 miles and one just over 50 miles. Very rarely, well never as old birds … I say, rarely because there may have been a reason once or so … But he was so tight I don't think he ever entertained spend a penny if a halfpenny would do etc.). 'Your birds re as conditioned as good as any ones in the fed, including mine and Gary's. But he and I bring them on for the races we want to win. I train because I get the firms' lorries going up and down the country - He was a top boss, Mainly to lose the culls. None, of course, go every week. But I chose and brought them on. Gary and I are often top Fed flyers etc. I like the distance races, Gary can't be bothered to send -- when he did the three times, he won the three times from Lerwick ... et still he NEVER ever TRAINED the birds! Likewise Catlin, Overton, and many more. So they, like Beardsmore and many others, pick the races that they want to win. If they're going to win them all that select birds well before the season starts to achieve this as they want, like most, to win every race. So I learned that my birds weren't good enough... You have all heard, maybe said it yourselves 'Can't understand it, Give the very best of feed, have a great airy loft and when I take them for a toss three times a week! They nigh always beat me home. They trap like the clappers. But race day, I don't know why, but am at the bottom of the ladder. I had in my club three fancier, living with a couple of hundred yards that sent nearly, or more than 200 birds between them.. But I would send first in the basket yearling 150mto 200 that were often in the top ten or 6. Only ever won one granted. So I resourced from common knowledge. From the horses mouth so to speak and my own action. I visited loft all over the country, even abroad. Spoke and above all listened. A constant learning curb eh!
  11. Another thing that amazes me, personally that is, that the rotation of the birds racing isn't followed. Was a natural occurrence when small back yard fanciers did it automatically. 'Races for races'. Ok, they flew say Berwick for Lerwick etc. But having 7- 10 pairs meant that had to conserve the birds that way. Have a bird loft fit, and tweaked for the race that they had pencilled out for it. A bird only has 6- 7 weeks top for so-called 'Super Form', Careful and stringent planning. Off course best-made plans of mice and men etc. meant some changes occurred, A bird away for a week was a boon, because it came big in excellent condition - mostly, well nigh always. We can touch nature in that regards. Lerwick was the pinnacle of the season, and all, or just about all, sent. Seasons end the problem was birds having to make way for the yearlings and y/b's! Now fancier breed colossal numbers of youngsters to combat losses! Never mind all the reason put forward. A lame crutch mostly. It's just their hope that one or two will make it. To turn out, maybe great! A significant number of expensive birds with so-called pedigrees mean absolutely NOTHING! Bolstered Culls! So lofts of culls are maintained at enormous costs BECAUSE 'The money I spent MUST turn out some magnificent birds sooner or later! Rubbish often breeds culls. Rubbish talk is just that Rubbish! First thing first is to get youngster that became content in the hotel you built for them! That in its self is needless but has a couple of things going for it besides making the fancier feeling he is doing right by his pigeons. Also, the garden and loft look beautiful, especially for the wife and neighbours. Then put into a system that suits you and is easily maintain via you. Stick with it. Yes, now there will be several losses by the birds that it does suit. But then that happens regardless of the system. Soon you will have pigeons that have accepted your ways, and get a love of the loft and its safety. J.M.O.

I think that you have hit the nail on right on the head there Walter. Many definitions there are, but I think this one sums it up Walter for me and many others Definition of Anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is a literary device that can be defined as a technique in which a writer ascribes human traits, ambitions, emotions, or entire behaviour's to animals, non-human beings, natural phenomena, or objects. … thoughts of thinking won't prevail then lol

Well I never did... yearlings first time in Basket 150 - miles races as often said. As for untrained birds causing confusion at race liberation and birds not leaving lib point and being reported 10/20 mile in wrong direction. Far from a fact to say the least. what about the very many that shouldn't even be in a basket, let alone a race. A very large percentage I'd wager. Indeed we hear that story at most club meetings. they fanciers 'Unsure' then state rubbish like 'Well it had to go... give it a chance to prove its self. I used to, like many 'Ole Timers' before first toss release the youngster up with Barnsley / Sheffield Feds at Wickstead park. Many back before long. Others a bit tired come night full. Losses? Nary many. Fient heart never won a fair pig .. give the birds the merit that they deserve and stop relating as in human terms... they aren't human. they have much properties that fair our stretch us.

Especially in our climate today and the B.O.P./ Hawks problems, I am amazed many more aren't copying the proven system of Just getting the youngster loft fit. The split into two batches and sent the first four races alternatively. Two come back races. Never mind trying to still a 'March' on club mates etc. The birds WILL hold their own if they have love, want of a home. Off course after a race or two, they will be better and fresher than those trained regularly, or hard. As for losses I wager far, far fewer. Many breeds 60 or more and feel that they have had a good season for the youngster if 10 - 20 left! So A, don't fret regards Losses. B. Don't worry about fitness, and they will be fitter and fresher. C. Any not home season ends means a saving on Feed and breeding culls. Yes, if Hawked etc. they will/may happen anyway! Remember you, I and everyone else haven't the foggiest idea how, and why they home … Outside defending/protecting their corner/perch or nest box. Flying to the perch is good.
  15. Mind she knows every ring number, pedigree and mating's etc. Near me she used to #Stride out' her land every year personally to make sure no one had encroached a foot or so of her land. I would say 100% she, Charles and co know every bit of every piece of land mate.
  16. Your wealthy then billt. Only time I ever had 2 acres - never mind 24 - was from a well aimed kick lol. Gosh having that 12 times is some thing I don't fancy
  17. “Queen Elizabeth II the largest landowner on Earth.†Queen Elizabeth II, head of state of the United Kingdom and of 31 other states and territories, is the legal owner of about 6,600 million acres of land, one sixth of the earth’s non ocean surface. She is the only person on earth who owns whole countries, and who owns countries that are not her own domestic territory. This land ownership is separate from her role as head of state and is different from other monarchies where no such claim is made – Norway, Belgium, Denmark etc. The value of her land holding. £17,600,000,000,000 (approx). This makes her the richest individual on earth. However, there is no way easily to value her real estate. There is no current market in the land of entire countries. At a rough estimate of $5,000 an acre, and based on the sale of Alaska to the USA by the Tsar, and of Louisiana to the USA by France, the Queen’s land holding is worth a notional $33,000,000,000,000 (Thirty three trillion dollars or about £17,600,000,000,000). Her holding is based on the laws of the countries she owns and her land title is valid in all the countries she owns. Her main holdings are Canada, the 2nd largest country on earth, with 2,467 million acres, Australia, the 7th largest country on earth with 1,900 million acres, the Papua New Guinea with114 million acres, New Zealand with 66 million acres and the UK with 60 million acres. She is the world’s largest landowner by a significant margin. The next largest landowner is the Russian state, with an overall ownership of 4,219 million acres, and a direct ownership comparable with the Queen’s land holding of 2,447 million acres. The 3rd largest landowner is the Chinese state, which claims all of Chinese land, about 2,365 million acres. The 4th largest landowner on earth is the Federal Government of the United States, which owns about one third of the land of the USA, 760 million acres. The fifth largest landowner on earth is the King of Saudi Arabia with 553 million acres Largest five personal landowners on Earh Queen Elizabeth II 6,600 million acres King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia 553 million acres King Bhumibol of Thailand 126 million acres King Mohammed IV of Morocco 113 million acres Sultan Quaboos of Oman 76 million acres Â
  18. You know, an argument maybe put forward as such 'Well I beat 2-3 hundred birds between 2-two to three hundred miles often. (Often not club, even federation sometimes send that many sadly)'Does one do that at 500 miles or more, so that say a lot and gives me and my birds merit'! Somewhat true … But then one is 'Finishing ahead of two to three hundreds birds that should ALL be able to that with easze. in fact any pigeon bred.. Indeed as the saying goes 'A paper Bag'. let's face it, outside of B.O.P. etc. the loft is mostly likely better off without them. Saves corn and breeding culls maybe. Then let's take that scenario a step further. Many, many more actually do go, AND have to be beaten. Further in the main these are proven hard day and distance birds … Bird that have 'Founded' nigh all strains for starters. Yes so call sprint birds etc. alike nigh all come from proven birds of that calibre. Proven too for constitution and immunity. If the go Lerwich / pau or any other such, many, many more are actually raced against than any club and most feds. P.s. I believed and proved many time any decent pigeon will fly 500 miles... if only the fancier would aloow thyem the chance. . Mine once all did three longest races. 600 miles takes well bred and carewd for system to do that ... especially on the day. Can one really, in all honesty, really compare a 200 mile bird beating 140 birds to that! Of course not!
  19. you know, and I'm 100% serious and truthful here, over the last 60 years of being in and around the sport, I can honestly state that the only races and names remembered are those from the distance. fanciers who won Lerwick or the Gold cup (3 longest races). Was a fancier for instance that never got placed in a race … flew in Raunds a very good loft on the East side of the fed granted. Well he had the only bird in race time from a very hard Thurso race... about 480 odd miles. He is remembered for that etc. Two tears later he fiddled a new loft. Became secretary and fiddled many races. Was caught and banned etc. Went to court later and jailed as a paedophile. Here were are 24 year later and the only think ever remembered (or brought up or mentioned) is that he won that very hard Thurso race. Yes one looks back at yesteryear and they are the first names to be brought up. fact that. Ok the conversation may, or will drift to other flyers who won often, and classed as 'Were a good flyer' … But no one will tell you, or remember what races they won!
  20. Have to agree. The buzz from any race can/could be good … But nowhere near as good as the buzz from a distance race. The further the more the buzz. The realism is simple. Most race winners are soon forgotten by then of the season and who won them etc. outside of the winner. Then even he is disappointed that no one seems to remember or care, except him or her. They have to think, and after a season it doesn't count or matter anyway. Everyone will know who won the Longest race, whether they sent or not. Yes for years to come. Likewise, that thrill of a bird returning and hitting the loft from a distance race is etched in both memory and the feeling. That wonderful feeling! Yes, you can win as many shorter races as you care to remember or name, but NONE even added together will be anywhere near as that Distance bird winner. Indeed many also if not winning. Yes, money and commercialism have taken the very backbone from our so-called sport. Indeed has harmed to a detrimental state of our pigeons. Not least Constitution and immunity and homing ability but the club spirit. Was a time when the whole season abounded around the pinnacle of the season ... The'Distance' race. Now they try to take away the very essence of the feat and merit that true warriors of the skies obtain. Yes, the fact is that everyone, but everyone remembers and spouted about a bird that flew the distance whether a winner or not.
  21. Can't for the love of me understand why it hasn't happened years ago . .. Oh sorry self interests and defending a corner prevailed. Beside the costs that could be saved and … But I guess Del it is far from happening. Well not till there are so few numbers demand such a stance.
  22. A bit cruel I always thought regards Salt as it burns them to death whilst the writher in pain. They only are about for a short spell this time of the year. Mind, like nigh all neighbours, I have both Frogs and toads in my garden … Chinese chalk is very effective, as it is for ants and cockroaches etc. Did you know that ants won't cross over a chalk line, but look for a gap between missing?
  23. I wish him well. I hope many are in same location so he can pick many up at once...
  24. I agree with that. Corridor politics and spouting behind their hands. Then say nowt of worth for any genuine way forward BUT SIT on their hands. … moan afterwards mostly. Indeed it is, and has been their follow on spouting nothing that the unscrupulous has set seeds and grown much to the detrimental to the sport in general and CLUBS for certain. Too many sheep are letting, and let most of the members being sheared … Mind having spouted this I must say that the original post says little of What and What to say the least. Braggarts and show offs, and loud mouths puffed up with own self importance is a pain often. But then a sauce of good Pee take. But the truth is that they seldom, in my experience have much to offer any good, and nye a certainly won't be standing up and counted if needed! …
  25. Great offer mate. Strange how you often hear in regards 'I wished I'd known … Gosh too late … and much more as I see, very many great free offers now a days. Yes have always been some offers and help … But must say if I was a newbie, this season alone I would have had a loft full of very well bred pigeons. indeed from late bred last years and now I would have had two teams … Okay I more than likely now a days I would have had to race and let Mr Basket help me to sort some out. Good to see and hear though.
