  1. Just recently there was a post enquiring about a certain fancier which brought about comments regarding how this fancier was the best the Federation has ever produced if not Scotland and I am rather peeved at the comments by non members of that federation or comments by those not old enough to know better. I am about to entertain you regarding the North West Federation Scotland. This Fed was the 2nd sometimes the 3rd largest Fed in Scotland enjoying at its height 800 members for the 20 square miles the majority of its fanciers were in compared to the 40 square 800 members of Fife and 200square miles of Lanarkshire with 1200 members. The Fed runs from South East to North West hence its name and is roughly 2 miles wide and 10 miles long. No other Federation could boast the type nor concentration of members any where in Britain. Will complete soonest as there is an emergency

  3. John Robertson flew from Jedburgh and was written about by I believe Mr Wortley the BHW scribe many moons ago. If my memory serves me John helped out in some capacity at Mr Kirkpatrick's loft and was presented prior to Mr Kirkpatrick's death a goodly number of pigeons to establish his loft in Jedburgh where he intended to settle with his wife who was related to John Kirkpatrick through a ballop connection. I may be wrong in this statement but it was many years ago. I first met John Robertson at the Edinburgh Show which was held in Waverly Railway station in those bygone days when I purchased at auction his offer. He kindly invited me to Jedburgh to view his birds which I did and came away with 6 youngsters free as that was the kind of man he was. With pure John Kirkpatrick's in 1970 he was 1st SNFC Nantes with MAN FRIDAY, in 1972 he was 1st SNFC Nantes with DOUBLE TOP, both were sold to Louis Massarella for an undisclosed sum but I can tell you the deal was young birds in return as they were the heritage of the Kirkpatrick story. When I read of comparisons of fanciers in the past compared to present day fanciers it brings to mind that those in our memories are were far far superior as to what some think are better now. If it was not for John Kirkpatrick 90% of the fanciers in the borders would have struggled to obtain good birds and like the Jamiesons, Hallidays, Dalgliesh's etc the borders are still a gold mine for Johnny Kirkpatrick's.
  4. Dal2, I stopped pairing birds together about 1970 when I realised I was hopeless at it and started getting winners when I left them to it to pick their own mates. "LOVE PAIRINGS" Now my experience has proved that the first pair of eggs from a yearling hen will produce the best pigeons. I am sure we have all had an excptional bird and on looking up its parents find we have lost it early racing. I do not have a great deal of faith in stock birds nor the bull system. When the late Brian Long wished me to be his loft manager we discussed the programme of artificial insemination which I felt was a little bit over the top however the Mrs was more interested in going elsewhere so I declined his offer with regret as I would have found it interesting racing 100 y/birds from the same sire. Best bird I ever raced was from the 5th nest from a pair and all its brothers and sisters were duffers, in fact I reared for years and never had another good un from that pair so are good birds the exception to the rule.
  5. What a fascinating post ! I have never met a fancier yet who can pick a pair of birds to breed winners in every nest, mind you I dont get out much.
  6. Aye !! This scientifically proven malarky can allow whosoever regulating the subject to come to their own conclusion.
  7. Googled "Farmers/guardian" who appear to have more to say on the subject ie, Defra not being to forward with the truth.
  8. This common insecticide poses a threat suggests The Journal "Science". It is routinely used to spray RAPE and CEREALS and suggests that it damages the homing ability of bees. The Scottish Wildlife Trust is calling for an immediate moratorium on the chemical's use.

  20. Many years ago when we were all ignorant we only fed grit to stop soft egg shells and that was its sole purpose.
  21. Producers of grit always make sure their has salt in the product which not only applies to grit however we will stay with grit for the time being. Because their is salt in grit it attracts dampness in fact even on the driest warmest summer night their is moisture in the air . Salt and air are attracted to each other biologically and air which is impregnated with moisture of varying degrees settles on the salt making the grit damp. In all our lofts we have minute feathers in abundance along with dust AKA Pigeon Lung which also settles on the damp grit and we then allow the birds to scoff it ad lib. Yes well keep shoveling it down their throats. P.S. Blame Andy.

    Grit

Having given all types of grit in the past and dissected droppings I have never came across any grit in them. However I have watched pigeons throw up and it is mostly grit that is secreted. Why are we giving our pigeons this product ??.
  24. Seeing more clearly !! Have been to specsavers. Sometimes age and experience is a hindrance because we are stuck in our rut, we dont want change because we are out our comfort zone and dont want to leave it. The unfortunate problem with the doo game is everyone has an opinion nowadays whether its right or wrong. In the past fanciers looked to the more knowledgable members and reckoned their opinions must be right. I was frowned upon 50 years ago because I dared to have an opinion and refused to be a sheep and have not changed. I will discuss politics with any one especially Scotsmen but I digress. East West ?? To me Lanarkshire members have been suckered into going East and no doubt this remark will bring some out the wood work. By the way I am on my 2nd glass of home made wine @ 20 proof.
