in 1997 when i first started to race.the first birds i got from the partnership of primrose and bell who flew in pentland fed. the most consistent pigeon i have raced i got from them.a checker pied staff van reet cock.
can,t remember my 1st pigeon but one of the 1st birds i kept in the house was a bb that had dropped out a race on to portobello prom i picked it up and kept it in my bedroom in a cardboard box 2 flights up with the open end against the window so as it could see out.fed on pop corn maze from the health food shop. when my old man found out he went of his nut.was told get that ******* pigeon out of hear.so a very unhappy me had to let it go .i took it down to prom and let it go .cursing the old man as i did.about half an hour later i heard my dad bellowing on me to get back up to the house. when i got back he said catch that ***** pigeon .as my dad lay on the couch watching tv with the window wide open the bird flew in and landed on the mantel piece and dropped one. my dad also said he s*** himself.
for me it was the worse race i have had in the 2 year back racing .dropped 10 2 back today. clocked 33 min behind the winner in my club.still trying to figure out what i did WRONG. birds all healthy and been doing well with them winning the 3 previous races in club.i think lack of tranning on my part also over feeding will find out next week.
as you can see we all do things a bit different. you are not going to race birds this year so why hurry to train them. i would wait till all birds are flying well and ranging.then i would take them 10 mile .would train 3x 10 mile 1st week 3 x 15 mile next again week .then 3x20 mile next again week.then thats as much as i would do with them this year.making sure i picked my days to train o.m.o
just putting this up just now to see how many member would be intrested in taking part in a YB breeder buyer in 2011.the way it would run is like this. their would be a sale of yb,s on pigeonbasics from all the lofts that want to participate in it. all monies from this sale would be payabil to IAN McKAY. all money raised would stay in pigeonbasics account till yb season ends. (THATS ALL YB,S SEASONS IN U.K) if you take part in this after the yb,s season is finished you will send detials of birds results for the season to ian or some one else.the results will then be checked via your fed or club secretary. then the best of the results will go in front of a panel to pick 1st 2nd and 3rd. 60% of money raised will go as prize money 40%will go to charity. this is only to see if it would be enough interest from members for this to go ahead so please put you name below if intrested .
their is not much chance of me doing this if it came about.as i would have yb,s a week out the nest to get put on a transporter for 3 day,s.i also think 3 day,s for yb,s that young would stress them out to the max. O.M.O
