  1. to improve on last years performance and if i cant win to at least not be too far behind the placings oh and to have as few losses as possible ;D sharron ;D
  2. Hi i m unable to make it to blackpool show on account of university exams, but id be interested to know if anyone goes to the above mentioned sale what prices the following lots fetch as i have inherited birds bred the same way or very similar The lots im interested in are 5,41,45,46,48,56 and 68. thanx in advance , enjoy blackpool sharron
  3. i shall be sending my rings in the post tommoro (4 lovely yellow nehu ones lol) how many rings have you got so far ??? i bet you could start a collection ;D
  4. i agree testing is good, id have no problems if i was asked to have my birds tested, after all iv nothing to hide and in my oppinion any advantage gained by illegal means should be exposed
  5. make sure you ring them young before there legs get too fat, i left one a bit too big and must of squeezed him when ringing and he has never forgotten that discomfort no matter how nice i had been before and have been since he still doesnt like me, and as a result he is always last to come in hardest to catch ect and gererally a bit scatty when im in the loft, which doesnt help with control, so make sure you make every experiance with humans as positive as possible from day 1 ps iv also noticed that the squeakers i have in nest boxes that are just above my eye level are much less tame even tho there parents are the tamest pair in the loft, i can only put this down to the fact that they dont see me when i clean out ect and only see me when i handle them, so must associate people only with being picked up (this year iv moved the parents down into a lower nest box to see if i get tamer youngens) and give that fancier a flick from me !! i think hes just trying to eliminate the competition and you can garentee he would be the 1st to offer advice/condolencies when on race day when thanx to following his advice your birds fly round and round the loft and wont come in !
  6. i think kirkpatricks still make white grit or at least they did as of july when i bought my last bag, i have found that the white grit lasts longer compared to the multi coloured stuff, i supply my grit along with a supply of black and pink minerals, incidently my birds seem to love the pink mineral powder and i think iv found out why, its smells gorgeous rather like sherbert
  7. Should i vaccinate the stock birds ?? as far as i know they have never been vaccinated and are aged from 2-6yrs, they dont fly out but do have acsess to an aviery, the reason i ask is that youngsters bred from the stock birds always seem less robust and more prone to illness compared to those bred from the racing birds even tho later when it comes to racing the stock bred birds perform better, the only thing that comes to mind is what bruno says " The thing about injecting stock birds is that pmv antibodies are then passed onto the youngsters in the pigeon milk. So their immune system geared towards combatting virus from first days in the nest." as other than vaccination my managment routine is that same for all the birds. oppinions most welcome
  8. what age is classed as old ???
  9. i was in partnership with my dad, tho i wasnt mentioned in the flying name oh no ;D i was the slave in the background who did all the loft cleaning basketing, paperwork and general dogsbodying and of course as a result got all the blame when things went pear shaped *cough* but i loved the birds and kept them on after his death last year, but i miss having someone to turn to for advice and find pinpointing what to send to race, how to choose when pairing up, and how the pooling system works all very mystifying that was my partners job
  10. I got nothing yet i put nest bowls + materials in on the 16th of dec for the stock birds and they dont seem interested (i split the sexes but only for 3 days until the cocks chose a box then i re installed the hens as i wanted to keep the same pairings as last year. i dont have heat or lights in the loft so i can only presume they just dont feel like its spring yet, im not in a rush but i cant help but feel a little dissapointed sharron
  11. any luck yet ??
  12. personally tho i do prefer the back garden just for conveniance sake i can pop out and visit the birds as oftern as i like and know that they are safe, have water ect
  13. iv experianced both over the years, my dad switched from allotment to the back garden as his health declined. the back garden is great as its just outa the back door easy for feeding and cleaning and touch wood no complaints from the neighbours in the 8yrs the birds have been here, whats not so good is that its in the middle of a housing estate and is nigh on impossible to keep them off the houses when exersizing. Dad had the allotment for over 50yrs and in that time we were unfortunatly broken into just twice and it was the caravan not the lofts that they targeted ;D the atmosphere on race day was much better on the allotment with fanciers forever popping in for a chat and a cuppa esspecially on channel races, the only reason the allotment had to go was due to my dads failing health
  14. i think with most of the members in my club in there late 50's to early 70's i will be lucky to have a club to fly in at all in the next 10yrs unless new members join, my village is as of this year down to one club having lost the shotton palms HS, only the Shotton WHS left now ;D
  15. i think it best left to the parents, fair enough if parental rearing is unavailable, but to take a youngster away from its parents just becouse you facy hand rearing a baby is in my oppinion a bit unfair, its not like pigeons make good house pets. sure they perch on your shoulder but they dont talk and they s**t all over the carpet
  16. is this class closed now or do i still have time to enter tommoro ??
  17. hi i started off with mixed breed feather footed fancies, which were very bonny to look at but didnt fly very much just liked to potter round the garden picking up fluff. but if you like something bonny to look at the feather footed ones are lovely. ;D
  18. i can think of worse lol instead of one you loose the lot ;D
  19. Hi all, i have a question about white logans, i was considering aquiring a pair, but the thing i want to know is are they any good for racing or are they just pet/wedding material. When they race what distance are they best suited too ??? and finally are they at increased risk from raptor attack due to there colouration. im sorry if these questions have been asked before :B best wishes sharron
  20. thanx redcheqhen that post was most helpful
  21. thats the main reason im asking Tammy, as ring distribution will influence when i pair up my stock birds
  22. thanx redcheqhen
