i feel like ordering 1000 lmao then at least i might have 2 or 3 to add to the old bird team the next year lol more realistically tho i have the space in the young bird for a YB team of 50 (thats with 80% of perches occupied), so was thinking of getting that many rings and seeing how i go, the rings this year had been pre ordered before my dads death so i just had to make do ps my mums like that about the birds too, you should have seen her face when i told her i had to stay in for amtrak on tues !! give her her due tho she is a big help esspecially when the OB folkstone national was held over this year, it ended up being on a weekday and i was at college !! *the horror* but she timed in for me (her 1st try at timing in bless her) and we won 1st club (alas we dont feature in the section results tho) we must have just had the fastest slowest bird in our fed lol

thanx alot for all your replies so far they have helped alot !! sharron

To echo paul and wiley an auction would be a great idea, and money would go to a great cause ;D
-
good god thats horrendus !! :'( i hope the buyers of the birds got compensation from amtrak at the very least "liberate in deed ! are they insane" and to think i just got 2 birds delivered yesterday after reading this im glad they made it in one peice ! sharron

i was just wondering what is the age that fanciers consider an old bird, too old for racing, its just that the team i have inherited contains no birds over 3yrs old, and iv noticed that fanciers in my club are still racing birds older than this ;D thanx sharron ps please forgive me if i am asking the most stupid questions, iv gotta learn from somewhere :B

in that case westy my knowlege of genetics tells me that if you wanted him to breed chocolates you would either have to breed with another chocolate or a pencil of the same lines that has given chocolate offspring before or breed it back to a daughter. as chocolate colouring is double ressessive meaning in order to be chocolate they have to have 2 ressessive genes. (one from the sire and one from the dam) (my colour obsession comes from a love of genetics, as well as the fact that they look pretty : all being well when my A-level results come out tommorow i should be going to study Genetics/biology at newcastle uni i hope he does well for your westy as he is very stunning, almost as stunning as my seagull cock (aka very huge pied staf van reet) that jimmy sent me lol. i am now seriously tempted lol all i need is some white ones, chocolate ones, mealies, black ones and a silvers and i have the compleate rainbow pigeon set :-/ i think lol
-
i know exactly how you feel !! same thing happened to me this year as a result i only have 3 old enough to race and 5 latebreds i started off with 15 but take north wales advice they may turn up ! what makes me most sad is that mine were rung both NEHU and with tel phone rings and not one was reported :'( ps if you want some very latebred replacements my old birds are still paired up as are jimmy's pair who are incidently due to lay (or so he tells me) But alas iv ran out of rings so cant keep anything to replace my own losses > (next year im ordering more than 15 rings !! lol) ps the only ring i have spare is a 2001 ring, do i dare ring a youngen with that for next year ? bearing in mind nothing in my current race team is over 2003 rung
-
Shotton Fed (with the NEHU) are going to newark
-
Dont tempt me CS i think 60 pigeons is quite enough for the time being lol but those chocolates at PJ lofts are very nice i wonder if anyone would notice if 60 became 62 lol ;D
-
hey westy, i dont sopose you have any chocolates on your race team, if so do they fly well or are they just bonnie to look at ??? ;D as iv always fancied a pair but the only place i know of who has them are louella and to be frank the birds in the past from there that my father had were not worth the amtrak fee never mind the price paid for em :B sharron
-
thats a chocolate Meuleman and a very handsome one at that is it yours westy ;D
-
hiya all can anyone tell me about this strain of pigeon what distance its best over ect. thanx in advance ;D sharron
-
i dont think my mum would be best pleased if i suggested that we concrete over the garden lol ;D

i much prefer old bird racing so far, but i think thats becouse i was left an already well established team by my late father, its the 1st time iv bred my own young birds and although they are bred from my fathers choice of pairings they leave a lot to be desired (could be my fault not theres however as its a bit like the blind leading the blind) ;D i raced the full program every race with my oldies and only lost 3 out of a team of 30. with the youngones i started with 15 (5 of which are latebreds) i promptly lost 5 during early training tosses, which left me with 5 suitable to race, out of those i lost 1 in the 1st race (it has since been reported dead in lancs :'(, must have gone in the total wrong direction poor bugger) but the other 4 are still here, and my latebreds are training so i can stick em in the last race of the season when the NEHU comes back to bubworth. never mind lol theres always next year ;D sharron

jimmy's lovely van reets pictured on page one are currently in the hands ov amtrak on there way from edinbro to co Durham, shotton colliery near peterlee to be exact to come and live with me ;D i cant wait for there arrival tommorow am, i will post pics of them settling in as and when my antique pc permits i will also post some pics of my bonny looking (if nothing else) pouw janssens ;D hopefully my racing scores will improve as my knowlege of racing increases as im sure it must be my fault and not the birds : sharron
-
;D thanx ace i hadnt thought of using google ;D
-
hiya im a novice as you can see my name is yellow lol and this is my 1st season, i currently have Janssens direct from pouw + paige and soon will be receiving thanx to kind donation from jimmy white a pair of stunning pieds which fifestay tells me are van loons. anyway cutting to the chase, i would love to find info about these 2 strains of pigeon, the kind of distance best suited too ect and maybe even a bit of background info if possible as to the history/development of the strain. So far my janssens have rewarded me with 3x 1st club, 1x 2nd club, and a few minor placings (they seem to score for me over distances of 200-400miles) i was wondering if this was typical or is my inexperiance inhibiting there performance ? :-/ thanx in advance sharron
-
what a lovely looking set up paulo, good luck with racing next year, its been my 1st racing season alone this year since taking on my fathers birds after his death in feb this year, im only 20 and female so im a bit of an alien species in my club as everyone is male and over 60 !! ;D it must be lovely to be on an allotment i can remember as a child before we moved house going down the allotment with dad on bourges day waiting for the birds and the amount of fellow pigeon men that would pop in for a chat. i miss that now i have the birds in the back garden so im kinda cut out of the loop but it makes cleaning out much easier with them just out of the back door ;D ps if your short of birds next year feel free to send a few rings i have janssens direct from paige and pouw bros (im told they are soposed to be good) tho i as yet have no concept of strains and systems (ive just raced natural with the Oldiesand there results have been ok 3 club 1sts aint too bad for a novice with no clue) sharron xxx

thanx redcheqhen i had no idea the nehu had one ;D How do birds end up at the stray centre then ?? i thought when you reported a stray the owner arranged collection from your loft
-
Sorry if i sound stupid forgive me im a novice, but what exactly is the stray centre ??? iv never heard of it ;D
-
just a quick update on my young bird with protein lump, i isolated him and fed a plain diet of barley and added garlic in the water at 1st the lump got bigger, about the size of a table tennis ball and i was beginning to think i should have had him culled but as he wasnt in any obvious pain i let him be and after 2 weeks the lump was reabsorbed weird or what i was expecting it to burst ! he is now back in the race team and doing fine, there is no trace of the lump left at all

Reporting Lost birds right/wrong
Keepsmilingqueen replied to Keepsmilingqueen's topic in Notice Board
thanx for your thoughts especially jimmy for the 7 day rule thingy, i didnt know about that one, but its roughly what i do anyway, i give them every chance to get home on there own steam before i report, i know some fanciers hate to have birds reported due to amtrak prices ect ect, but at the same time id personally like to know were my lost birds end up and i totally understand if they dont wanna pay to get it back, im happy to go along with whatever they suggest. i must just have pigeon hotel in neon letters above my loft as once they come in the dont seem to wanna leave and as i dont do the killing thing (my basket does my sorting for me) and i wont keep something i cant race, i feel i must report them if they hang around munching my corn for too long !! -
;D So far this season iv lost 10 young birds training and 5 maybe 6 late bred yearlings during the old bird races all of which had my Tel number rings on. and ive not had a feather reported, i take the time to ring these birds and the fact is if they go astray i would like em back or at least id like to know were they ended up ! i even got a hen back last week and she went missing on the 1st old bird race of the year and someone had removed the race rubber and my telephone ring and replaced it with a yellow clippy ring (if they wanted the bird that much they just had to phone and i would have willingy transfered it !!) > it seems plain to me they kept her in to breed from which to me seems silly as they have no idea of her pedigree and if she can get lost what does it say about her offsprings racing potential Now so far iv had roughly 7 strays come into my loft and if they hang about more than a day or two i report them (i seem to be getting lots of su 06's) what i want to know is as a fancier would you prefer your birds reported or just left the there fate, (i am only a novice fancier and im wondering if i am doing the wrong thing here!) i am not reporting them to the rpra direct unless i have no choice i am phoning club secs and i always leave it up to the fancier as to there arrangements for the bird, if they dont wanna pay amtrak and would prefer me to toss it and let it find its own way home fair enough or if they wanna transfer it over thats fine.
