in my opinion this is a very scary subject, you only need to look at the internet, under bird flu to see how scary this is, i e mailed dr mittal of purdoe unniversity, he said that the propability of this virus comming to the uk was very strong , and the problem is that it mutates as it travells, at that time he asked me to forward any questions that we might want to know, so that i could privately e mail him, and then i could in turn p.m. the forum member, there were no questions asked by forum members.so i emailed him back, thanked him for his offer of help, and the advice he gave me ,so i now look at the internet and try and keep up do date with it., along with these posts,

got you hyacinth, see the old wrinklies are not so daft, i couldnt help smiling, when thinking back, my father gave my sister a tanner to pick out all the maize from this mixture, which he had emptied on the living room floor, she was to pick the maize out and put it in a seperate bucket, he was sitting on the easy chair, his feet sticking out in his stocking soles, with a hole in the big toe, after a while ,my sister went to pick at his big toe, thinking it was a bit maize,,,,well ive never saw him move so quick in his life, funny how you never forget these wee things ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

congrats, on your great result, ashley

i beleive in differnt feeding for differnt racing, also during the moult a higher protein diet, also when feeding young, youll notice the birds wont even eat the maize whilst feeding young, i remember trying these white protein peas 3 pound a bag, from the farmer, reared cracking ybs,[ mixed it with maples and beans, and very little maize] i would say the fancier from dumfries is spot on,, one thing is , idont think the quality of feeding is as good as 30 years ago, my personal opinion is , thats where a lot of our trouble pops up.

ive sent my brothers e mail to p basics , it contains photos of pretty little song bird,,, in shreds , and of the sparrowhawk, hes conditioned his top class 100 strong team of canaries, for his first show of the year on sat, and due to the sparrowhawk, entering the door, while he was in the garden 6ft from the door, he now doubts if he can enter any, as they were terrified and now lost condition, after he chased it away , and closed the door he went in for his tea , his daughter shouted to him at the window , but it was too late , the dunnock, as he says, was in shreds. his canaries are his life to him, idont know if theyll print the photos

hi pigeon man, thats why i was asking if it was prisoner or flying out, being a prisoner it could well be a calcium deficit,, its a long time since ive heard hyacinths calcium method, my father, when we kept chickens , swore blind by this. but off course he used to put the shells under the grill for a min or two, and did exactly as hyacinth said, and it cost nowt, you can also get calcium tablets, ithink that is in old hands elementals, theres certainly no harm trying it, i also remember my old man, giving them a smarty on return from race, i suppose it was the suger or glucose in it, that helped, dont know what colour they liked the best though :)

in latter years i raced widowhood cocks, i found a good tip was after showing the hens, used to take the cocks 4 mile up the road, let them fly back to hens, but after basketing , laid the basket out on the lawn with a cover over it to let them settle, then to the club. [ found it good for the shorter races]

i had birds a while ago from charlie wooff [of wooff bros and son new ollerton] two of them were from m and d evans, myrtle lofts, one of these pigeons ,nicknamed the myrtle cock, won 7 races including dorchestor two years on the trot, also a top position from sartilly 505 miles and it was supposed to be a sprinter

no apologies needed bruno , its a good debate ,at least we can speak our minds my bit on misenterpretation is my own personal grievance, and as i said in an earlier post ,,,can be very dangerous, this was due to a past experiences, nothing personally against you. but due to a past experience, did touch on a nerve. when we have a debate like that , we can all learn something out of all the posts. so keep things going buddy, cheers jimmy

once they get the taste of them they will eat them with relish, but as shadow says they are very fattening,i found them very usefull for the the longer races and in the rearing of young birds, and as i say once they get the taste of them ,theyll go daft on them , so broken down a bit are very handy in keeping birds tame, i used to also buy them for human consumtion , a little at a time. i found i was eating them myself, and my droppings were more like a nutty bar ;D ;D ;D p.s not salted peanuts
-
does anyone use peanuts in preparing birds for longer races or any other uses

i cant see that a seven yearold hen should have arthritis, far older birds are prone to this, im not quite understanding wobble, is it walking stiffly or is it wobbly on its feet. is it a prisoner or does it fly out,, allthough c,l,o, [fish oil] can be good for birds, i somehow think its not going to help that bird, if the bird is flying out and has grit and minerals in front of it, i would tend to think it may be something more serious, i would question if you really needed the bird, or consult a vet
-
brilliant for the birds, in all sorts of ways, but remember and dont use that bottle for after shave lotion ;D ;D ;D
-
hi speedbird, i think that was exellent advice from shadow on his system and should suit you,, about the radio, i used to have this on all day as well, and found this relaxed the birds, but not the neighbours, but i just had it on quietly, but it really did seem to relax them, wish you luck with the latebreds

that last point was exactly what i was talking about MISINTERPRETATION after a very hard fly it can take up to the second day before the droppings are right, BUT ,GIVEN ELECTROLYTES, SPEEDS THIS RECOVERY TIME UP, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A BIRD AFTER 17 HOURS ON THE WING//?OR FELT IT, TO PUT IT MILDLY ITS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DRAINED . SO PLEASE DO NOT TWIST MY WORDS.

sir colin b bar cock su 89 p 3148in 1991 was 12th sect 60th open scottish national sartilly over 500 miles . in 1992 he was 12th sect 25th open nantes, scottish national over 600 miles in 1993 he was sent to scottish national sartilly, over 500 miles, he was 82nd sect 136th open , he was then givenELECTROLYTES FOR 3 DAYS then, approx THREE weeks after that, he was sent to scottish national nantes, over 600 miles, and in a cold blasting head north wind, was 1st sect. 2nd national NOW AFTER MORE THAN 50 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITH PIGEONS and trying the experiment i mentioned before, does anyone think i would have even chanced giving giving him electrolytes, if i thought it was going to be detrimental to that pigeon incidently, the section he flew in was the biggest in the scottish national. with due respect bruno, i do not doubt that you have done your homework, but words can be misintepretated, which can be a dangerous thing, and thats not getting at you,we are all . including me, liable to misintepritation, i understand doostalkers findings, this has to be some kind of misinterpretation, or it would be immpossible, theres a big differance in 18 p.c than 30 p.c. youve obviously , collected a lot of information on peoples against electrolytes, but it would just be as easy to get the same ammount of information on peoples for. electrolytes, we are all human and all have differant opinions at times, but for myself, i beleive in trying things for myself, i have tried this and found it beneficial to recovery, after a hard , strenuous race, so these are my findings., so how can i deny myself that it works for me, fanciers may have differant opinions on this, but they are entitled to their opinions,,, i allways say try before you buy, then see if it suits you, if it does, buy ,it if it doesnt , dont.
-
theres a very simple solution here,, which ive tried send a team of racers from two sections to decent hard race give one lot electrolytes the other plain water and see for yourself which birds droppings go back to normal quickest. nobody fools me with big words , and who said this or that, simple answer , try it for yourself, the birds that have had electrolytes recouperate quicker. very, very, easy to find out, without words. [ experience] try it.
