agree with shadow, if you can get the late breds trained to a 20 mile radius on good days, itll do no harm, but basket trained first, i reckon is very imprtant

i have found latebreds to turn out very good pigeons, but i think you have to be very patient with them, the very first thing i would do ,in the year of birth is basket train them, i,e feed and water in the basket, i have found that birds bred in july, aug, to be perfectly reared as to the light nights and warmer weather, and as said in some previous posts, wouldnt train them untill the end of may the following year,to avoid the cold east wids etc,i would rather jump them in to a 150 mile race at the end of may, than send them 60 miles in early april , ive found you lose less.i would be quite happy if my late breds had 2or 3 races at around that distance, then leave them well alone, but as two year olds , i would race them up to 350 miles if they were sprint pigeons. if they were bred for the distance, and if it were distance races i was going for, i would give about 3 races try to get an 8 hour fly for them, then with a break ,send them 500 miles or over i beleive there are many good yearlings or latebreds lost in the month of april. jimmy

the pigeons born in december and rung the following year as ybs are actualy late latebreds and due to the daylight hours then are automaticly on the darkness system. the later the birds are bred the more flights they will hold,. as latebreds i was meaning latebreds bred and rung in the currant year, which may have cast ,say5 or 6 flights, which would have been to late for the yb racing, that particular year. i just feel there are a lot of well bred latebreds given to new starters and would like the forum members advice on them , my own personable opinion is for the new starter to keep these for breeding ,to form a team, for the future, but thats not to say im right, as many of my best pigeons have been latebreds at 2 3 4 yearolds, but treated slightly differantly as yearling latebreds

yes your quite right power blast , havent seen the bhw yet but beleive you , and if you pardon me saying so, its not if its going to happen its more like when its going to happen,, we should keep our eyes open in the scotsman and the gaurdian to see if brunos letters are printed and what response we get to them [it wasnt in the scotsman today] but hes not long sent the letters, so lets wait and see ,on that one. jimmy

what are the forums views on latebreds, and what would be the best way to treat them, and has any forum members won with them, or any practical advice for new starters with latebreds,,,,,,jimmy white

in my veiw all these posts are valuable to the new starter [and the old fancier] but just to answer snowies question about linseed , yes this is very good in the moult ,, but to give them it sparingly, as giving too much will , will loosen the droppings

just to clarify your last post bruno, i think it could be mistaken that tom pennycot advises this slaughter, he certainly does not , irealise what you mean, but could be mistaken the way youve posted. as far as i know mr pennycot is a vetenary surgeon and ALSO a pigeon fancier , so i should imagine that would be the last thing on his mind. hes a very knowledgable man and being a fancier himself can only help, things ,,,, i agree with rose and all, its the old story money is the route of all evil thats the message i got when when i did my enquiries pigeons mean absolutely nothing to the government,, but off course poultry etc does so you can read between the lines jimmy

i took a visit today to the royal dick vet, the bush estate, phoned the maff at st boswells then phoned tom penycott, i found mr penycott to be quite a gentleman and at least took the time to speak to me and explained the need for hygeine etc and any ailing or dead pigeon should be immediatly taken for p.m.. any strays should be kept seperate reported and returned asap.providing their well.he said we dont have a vaccine as such, as this virus tends to mutate as it travels. so really we would have to get it first before we can produce a vaccine, i asked him if we will definately get this bird flu or not get it, his answer was we probably will,,,, i asked at the bush estate, the same questions. they said we would probably would be better keeping birds confined and use the same hygeine, i then asked if there were still free range chickens, they said yes, so i asked him why he advises us to keep our birds in,yet there were free range chickens ,he then suddenly was very busy, and said its just till we find out more, then he was off. when i phoned the maff, they said they couldnt give me private information on the phone so i asked them if they would e.mail me with any info they said no, and that i was to ask the pigeon organizations, so that was a great help so basicly they are saying to me , wait till it comes then well do something.. mr tom pennycot was the best help and at least took the time to help and advise.., when i was in the royal dick vet, i picked up an old sac newspaper and noticed that tom pennycot [along with others]was in india last year,,,,,continuing to work on improving the health of scavenging poultry,,,,it seems this man knows his bussiness

hi snowy, sometimes we term these old birds from other members as broken birds. and as broken birds ,can be quite unpredictable, and are liable to go back to the old loft for a variety of reasons, to give you an example, igot a bird in as a yb which was transferred to me,[belonging blackpool] i trained raced this bird right to th yb national, and the bird did quite well, as a yearling this bird was trained and raced on widowhood, the 4th race was 100 miles approx when he was 2nd in the race, sunday he dissapeared, i then got phone call from blackpool. the bird was back in his loft as if it had never been away the reason for this was looking for its hen. but this sort of thing can be put to good use i,e. ibought a pigeon for 8 £ from a chap who packed in, and moved house, this was about 20 miles from me, now this widowhood cock, every morning and every evening would fly back to his old place[no loft there] so in effect the bird flew 80 miles everyday of its own accord, this pigeon had 3 races then sent to the blue ribband national and was 15 in all scot. so in fact the bird trained itself and when it wanted to and not when forced to.. but youll find out that pigeons have a memory that beats all , i had this pigeon till it was16 and it still done this, so put the memory test to good use , if your birds are trained to be tame as ybs they will allways be tame ,if they pick out of your hand as ybs theil allways do this ,and if you have a tame loft these birds are happy with their owner, and happier in their suroundings. which i beleive make better pigeons , just to go back to one of my earlier posts, you wont go far wrong with the three c,s condition, contentment, and control and youll pick all this up as you go along,,,,,,, now apart from all this, my mouse is not working as it should,,so theres a moose loose aboot this hoose ha ha keep smiling jimmy

judging by the entries on sat. through this way , not a lot , unless of course some members are saving birds for the national, i certainly hope they get a decent entry jimmy

bruno i certainly hope no one ever even begins to thing ,,,,nutter,,,,, im quite sure we all see the work time etc your putting into this, ijust hope the fanciers realise this, which im sure most of them do, AS YOU ARE DOING IT FOR THEM and may i add for no financial gain, which makes a change ,in this world we are living in today. as i said before, every shred of information is vital, from any one, providing it is not rumour and scare mongering, which im afraid to say, is sometimes the case among bird fanciers, as this subject is scary enough , as i said before , read and digest, and if you have any informative news post it.

just a thought on yb sickness, we seem to have had a taste of it from all over the uk which never happened years ago what causes it? whats so differant now, as it was years ago,, we all say we have more ybs nowadays but really there were still many big lofts and big team ybs, then as well, there were also as many dirty lofts as there were clean lofts ,i would go as far to say cleaner now, the birdages then, were far more than now, 5 to 6000 birds to rennes, 700 in my own old club, of course there were more members then, but when you think of it there were just as many pigeons then as there is now ,so why is this just happened in the last few years.when this first reared its ugly head, i remember getting a phone call from cornwall from a fancier who had this [who had a small loft and about 20 birds] then at the same time, it appeared up here, this would approx be about ten years ago. there was no way these birds came in contact with each other so that would kind of suggest that it was airborne so if it was airborne, why again did we not have that years ago, its the same air and the same wind. and the same water albeit differant water in differant parts of the country , just as it was then, so really [and this is a complete shot in the dark]the only thing we all had in common was the food, be it differant food brand names .the maples, maize and certain grains etc were mostly imported, from the same places. now i often wonder if these grains are grown the same as years ago, are they forced or are they fertilized or whatever, the main thing i was getting at , are they grown the same way as they were years ago, i just wondered, and if they werent grown the same way as they used to be. could this just possibly be the root [pardon the pun] of the problem.,as the yb sickness seems to be a digestive disorder which is generally to do with food , which again can cause secondry infections just a thought jimmy
