  1. clockman, bruno, theres plenty of farms down the east coast will sell beans, there may well be some up here now, i know there was an agricultural place in dundee that sold them, just forget the name of it, iasked the farm hand near me he said it was protein feeding for the cattle, thatsall he said. but to my mind there are beans , and beans, depending on the soil and the season weve had, some years there are more moisture content than others,,, and especialy the way its stored.and the age of the beans you could allways make enquiries. p.s speedbird has the right idea, some fanciers race out and out distance, some race sprint, and some try both, i was a glutton for punishment and tried both, thats why my hair is like my name ;D ;D ;D
  2. i agree with members 2 birds to each class, also with hyacinth, a golden oldies and channel class, as you might get some members putting a lot of birds in , maybe some of the new commers will not have many birds, and as for the more experienced, im sure you could pick 2 of what you think are the best, again its only my opinion , i think it should be treated as a bit fun, with some nice photos, to look at
  3. hows the wee young one pecked hen, i hope its good news
  4. as a young lad, i remember the older fanciers at the time, telling me to put salt in their bath to cure lice, so the first moot i went to i asked this question,,,,what does salt in the bath water do to lice? the answer i got was,,it makes them thirsty. so i quietly dissapeared to the toilet for half an hour, talk about a red face
  5. if you havent changed your feeding, keep them in for a couple of days, it may be something their picking at outside, especially at this time of the year, but would get there droppings tested anyway.
  6. here i go again putting my finger in the fire,,,, well the best thing is obviously prevention,,, a dry, airy, uncrowded loft but youll occasionaly see a bit of respiratory now and again .i.e birds homming after a while and wild birds drinking their water, and i do beleive that milton in the water can stop it spreading to other birds , and as bruno said, some eye problems are are in fact respiratory problems, some are not. but, now how can i say this, has any one tried or heard of, a bird with one eyed cold,,,,spitting in its eye, it must be pure spit, not off a smoker or drinker, preferrably a childs spit, ill say no more at the moment, see what reaction i get. think ill change my name now, or flit :)
  7. yes your right wings i think its a case of setting the birds up for the races in question, only problem is you dont get so many chances at the distance, but as you say, youve got to pick your best, set them up, then take your chance, its the only way to find out.
  8. i notice here in scotland, they are growing more beans each year, quite common about here now to see a field of tic beans
  9. i think your heading shoud have been, under , the plural,,, the kidneys,,,, as new starters could be a bit confused in thinking they had one kidney its me that has one kidney and im no kiddenye,, good article though
  10. thanks bruno, ill get your post to my brother, the good news is he won best in show and many prizes, i think maybe the photos are slightly deceiving, as the have been taken from the back door of his house, the door you see on left, is the side garage door, but the canary hut that you see is only about one third, the other two thirds are are at the back of the garage, the door you see open is normally closed, he has heating, and air conditioning , the problem was the sky lights, which ,i beleive he has stuck discs, around, and built cages over, his main problem as you can see is the hawks killing the song birds .he so loves to feed and watch in his garden, but im sure hell explain better than me, but im rure hell be interested in your post, p,s after reading the other article, he will be worried about these very small breed of rabbits his daughter has.
  11. agree with doostalker, us men love to debate things like that, a lot of this is to gull the beginner. really its either bred off a winner or bred off a prize winner, or bred off a bird that hasnt won,or it could be g children off these birds etc as wendell LEVI, said its all in the JEANS, oh well i tried ha ha
  12. agree with doostalker, us men love to debate things like that, a lot of this is to gull the beginner. really its either bred off a winner or bred off a prize winner, or bred off a bird that hasnt won,or it could be g children off these birds etc as wendell LEVI, said its all in the JEANS, oh well i tried ha ha
  13. yes agree both stucky and speedy, i put a post on these lines [ in the wrong post]it was under the post on culls, should have really made a new post of it , just to get all opinions?? it would be interesting, i understand what wings is saying, the bird doesnt know its a sprintor a distance, but it has to have the fuel and the constitution for the long hard races, i fnd that the biggest fault with failing at the distance are training too early ,racing to early, and too many club races, in other words ,there is not enough fuel in the tank left, for the long ones, only my opinion.
  14. i agree with bruno that some pellets can be usefull, and contain fish oils etc , but as doostalker said beware of pellets i,e. chicken ,turkey, that contain antibiotics, i believe that pigeons should have grain as a staple diet , and if you fancy some pellets as a supplement, ok.but if you feed all pellets all the time, you will make the gizzard redundant, according to armand scheers, or was it his brother, garden.??/
  15. think were all scared to post on this ,, it wont go away, by that
  16. looking at the price of rabbit hutches in pet city, you could build an 8 by 6 cheaper, buying , some 2by 2s and some boarding, or cheaper still ,,,,skips
  17. honestly sorry bruno, didnt mean it like that, didnt want to raise your pulses ;D ;D ;D
  18. cannot agree more this is all part of their recovery, iused to put hot water in the bath , beleive it or not the birds absolutely loved it [ not too hot off course]
  19. another good book is wendell levi the pigeon. mines is lent out never to return. but if i remember right there are photos in that on various grains.
  20. sounds good webmaster just need to get some dates arranged, and hopefully will get some nice photos, should be nice to look at, for all
  21. i wish that article had been in all the papers,,, and t,v news i,e bruno post .... didnt notice mine at first, brother david couldnt get right photos, but you can just see the sparrow hawk on the hut in the first photo, just.
  22. hi pecked hen , im sorry to hear about your young one, i think maybe you got them a bit too young, they should really be seperated from the adults ,about 3 to 4 weeks, but even at that, they can still survive, sometimes its worth gently dipping their beaks in the water dish, to let them know where the water is, but at least you have gave it through syringe, if its water thats the problem ittl soon pick up, if not you may have a problem on your hands, it migh be worth seperating it from the others, and try syringing some live yogurt down its crop, and take it from there,
  23. i know that rose is very keen, and does very well, in the distance races.and when she mentioned an 18 year old cock still filling his eggs, struck a cord whith me, is it me or my imagination, that good distance pigeons seem to have more longevity, than sprint pigeons, my friend had an exeptional distance hen, that lived to 21 [scot own book 2000 p 120 ] i have had birds live to 19 years, i often wonder if it has any thing to do with the constitution of the bird, which i think has. with due respect to distance or sprint, racing, i may well be wrong, but with distance birds, they have this in bred constitution. i may well be poking my finger in the fire here, but in my opinion, you can win sprint races with distance birds, but you cant win distance races with sprint birds,[ unless the conditions suit,] this is only my experience, and my opinion p.s my old meally scored 9 times at 5,to over 600 miles taking a good position at 9 years old, the same year he won the penrith race in the club approx 100 miles [ the only bird i never put a penny on]just wondered opinions on this
  24. i agree about the ivomec, and that these lice are not a serious problem ., unless covered in them , sometimes that can be a sick pigeon unable to prune itself, but worse by far are the red mite, which are one of the blood sucking mites, and an infestation of these will kill ybs in the nest, but the above product will sort that out along with loft cleaning with virkon s,,,,, soak a beer mat in virkon s once a week, and put under the nest pan, usually keeps all beesties away
  25. sometimes i think its what they are prepaired for i.e differant for sprint or distance
