  1. electrolytes are used after the race les parkinson e mail. on normal droppings the white creamy top of the dropping is urine, the rest is sh** to put it bluntly, when a bird comes home after a hard fly, this is combined together to make loose droppings which are toxins built up on its hard fly, the bird loses weight, through this . to build the bird up quicker, i give them electrolytes, which contains, valuable amino acids, glucose sugar and salt among other things, potasium etc. pigeons need salt, put a coo lick in your loft when their feeding young , theil pick at it all day, why? because they have lost or are loosing electrolytes.
  2. i would go along with hyacinth but add to it ,,the grand final best in show,,, but would i be able to enter in the golden oldies??? i think it would all be good fun , and keep things going a bit and if it were the owners like the pigeons, i would win that ,ive bigger wattles than the old stock cock in the loft,,,,,i wouldnt really say i have a big nose, but if you could have seen me flicking the hymn book over at church on sunday, you wouldnt have thought it possible, ha ha
  3. THANKS LADS JIMMY
  4. THAT WAS A CRACKER CLOCKMAN, GOOD TO SEE YOU TOEING THE LINE ;D ;D ;D
  5. WE SEEM TO HAVE CHANGED THE THREAD THROUGH THESE POSTS, INTERESTING AS THEY ARE,,,,, BUT WE STARTED ABOUT WINTER ACTIVITIES, AND I REPLIED TO SNOWIES SUGGESTION, WHAT ABOUT A FORUM SHOW, A LIST OF PHOTOS FOR EACH CLASS, AND SOME ONE JUDGING THEM,,, ANYONE INTERESTED?
  6. I HAD NEAR ENOUGH THE SAME EXPERIENCE AS YOU ,THEMAN. ALL THE 5 WEEK OLD YBS ALL PEACEFULLY IN THE BATH ON A BEAUTIFULL MORNING, SITTING THERE WITH A CUP OF TEA AND FAG , ENJOYING THE PEACE AND QUIET, WHEN , BANG , A HEN SPARROW HAWK CAME FROM NOWHERE, ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL HELL BROKE OUT .THESE YBS , [ NOT ON THE WING PROPERLY]SCATTERRED SOME FLEW BACK THROUGH THE OPEN DOORS AND BELTED THE BACK OF THE LOFT, WITH SUCH A FORCE THAT MOST OF THEM WERE CONCUSSED, ANOTHER TIME I WATCHED THE HAWK GRAB A PIGEON AND FELL DOWN THE BACK OF THE LOFT, I MANAGED TO WARD OFF THE HAWK, BUT COULDNT FIND THE PIGEON, I FOUND IT LATER ,COWERING UNDER THE LOFT, STILL ALIVE, AFTER GETTING IT OUT ONLY TO FIND IT WAS MY BEST PIGEON WHICH HAD WON MANY RACES INCLUDING TAKING 3 GOOD NATIONAL POSITIONS, THIS BIRD WOULD NOT LEAVE THE LOFT FOR A LONG TIME, EVENTUALLY, HE GAINED ENOUGH CONFIDENCE AND FLEW WITH THE REST, BUT THIS BIRD NEVER EVER SCORED AGAIN , LOOSING HIM FROM RENNES, A RACE HE HAD SCORED TWICE IN
  7. any body else views on this ???
  8. no, bruno, its not because they have missed a meal,in fact the opposite, the birds sould be fed as much as possible before race days ,[not to close to basketing times] these pigeons build up toxins ,during their flight home,, that off course is poisons,, poisons give the runs [ iknow ive just had them],, runs make them loose valuable, salts and amino acids, the quicker these are replaced, the quicker the bird recovers ,,, so instead of reading up on things, try things for yourself, thats the sure way of finding out things with pigeons ,whether they work or not, sorry to raise the blood pressure slightly :) ,, but the old saying is, the proof of the pudding is in the eating :)
  9. going back to hyacinths point, ie picket rspb flag day etc, we might be looked at as though we were one of these animal rights nutters, i wonder if we had leaflets about all the war pigeons, with dicken medal, ie winkie , g i joe etc, and a rough out line on all these pigeons , and the lives they saved and hand them out , beside the flag sellers, and explaining the hawk situation,, had the hawks been as rife then, , a lot less lives would have been saved.
  10. ive read all these posts very carefully and am quite sure, that according to all these posts proove the point of the very first post, who is talking sense and who is taking nonsense, its very easy to see that the so called hawk expert is talking complete rubish, can the rspb not see this, and get an expert, that can tell the truth, and be honest, is that too much to ask for
  11. i would pair him with my best hen, if i thought a lot of the cock, take the eggs away at 8 days, foster them, then race him 4 races spare, as he is going for the 500 miler, 4 races would be plenty.i would then count back from the 500 mile race in question, pair him back to his old hen [never having let him see it that year]then send him sitting 10 days on eggs.making sure that he had at least one 8 hour race beforehand four weeks previous to the big one, one weeks rest, then paired, trained every day 50 miles then a weeks rest gathering nest materials, you would then find he would have just cast his first flight and should be in exellant shape
  12. my pigeons are prisoners ,not through choice i might add, these birds can never pick arround the garden, so every now and again i give them pigeon tea which are just herbs, but i take the bitterness out simply by adding a couple of spoons of sugar, and they love it. i had a girl friend once [beleive it or not :) ]from cornwall who raced pigeons very succesfully, [ if i keep talking like that she might phone me up ;) ] who was herb mad, meant in the nicest way,she grew all sorts of herbs, and the pigeons were never away from this, in fact she called one of her 500 mile winners ,,herbie, and i thought she loved me so much, she would have called it after me, but it was at that point she left me ;D ;D ;D still theres hope for fame yet, young westy has called one of his latebreds sir james, and im very proud of that
  13. bruno my freind [just to keep the blood pressure down] ;D ;D why does a pigeon , allways from a hard fly allways have wattery droppings on arrival. and sometimes on to the next day???
  14. reply to snowy, as i know your just starting up i would tend to agree with bruno, and concentrate in trying to get a decent team of ybs, i understand your very keen and raring to go, but it can be very disheartning to try and race , very latebred birds, and then lose them early doors, these latebreds will breed you very good birds in feb or march, its very difficult when first starting , and with a wee bit of patience, you could have a great yb team and if you wanted to ,you could train this years latebreds with the ybs. really an awfull lot of good birds get lost in the cold east winds of march , april. i would follow brunos advice, which would mean the following year you would near enough be able to compete against the best, especialy with your keenness and dedication wish you luck jimmy
  15. i remember the chap, a member of this forum, who will know what im saying. he asked me to handle his birds before he sent them the race, there was a lovely cheq pied, absolutely stinking with garlic, this bird topped the fed the next day, but the point was it was sticking out in condition,,,,somebody on this forum is going to chuckle [ or belt me one] ;D ;D ;D ;D
  16. i sincererly hope you have did well in your great efforts, both maddy and clockman, lets just hope and pray that wee rachel keeps improving, it has to be said that she really is a bonny wee girl, so god bless you rachel
  17. i think thats a good idea of snowy ,we could actually have a show on the forum, with the pigeons i mean[ if it were the members, ladbrookes would make me money on]of course we would have to wait on the birds moulting , but entries could allways be taken any body interested or any ideas, its allways a bit of fun and off course speckled wouldnt be allowed to put her chicken in [ ill suffer for that[ ;D ;D ;D
  18. ELECTROLYTES AND HYDRATION SALTS ARE THE SAME. NORMAL PIGEONS CANT SWEAT AND THEY DONT LOSE ELECTROLYTES. THEY CAN ONLY LOOSE ELECTROLYTES WHEN THEY HAVE DIARRHEA AND AT THAT MOMENT ITS NECESSARY TO GIVE ELECTROLYTES. MOST OF THE TIME THE ELECTROLYTES ARE MIXED WITH ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS AND THEY ARE GOOD FOR THE RECUPERATION OF PIGEONS, IN THIS WAY ITS GOOD TO GIVE ELECTRO LYTES WITH ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS TO ACCELERATE THE RECUPERATION,,,,,,,, DR VANDERSPEN REMEMBERING THAT YOUR PIGEONS BUILD UP TOXINS WHEN RACING AND ON HOME COMMING ALLWAYS HAVE LOOSE DROPPINGS, SO ELECTROLYTES OR REHYDRATION SALTS ,HELP IN THE PROCESS OF RECOVERY,,,,DR WHITE
  19. the miltman arrives ,,, bhw article by les parkinson, on mr mrs j mathews of congleton. question,,do you give any special treatments when the birds come home from the race, as a precaution against anything they may have picked up in the basket answer,,,WE DO PUT MILTON IN THE WATER, WHEN THEY RETURN, FOR STERILIZATION PURPOSES and they can race pigeons, beleive me :)
  20. keep it light lads [ brunos in his element now ;D ;D ;D ] were all jock tamsons bairns ;)
  21. i reared up 5 of a family my wife was married before and had these children to her previous husband, therefor they are my adopted step children my indirect sons and daughters i have a daughter who i sired [i hope] she is my direct daughter, , just to confuse things further ;D ;D ;D
  22. i can only reiterate what shadow said,,, its not that cocks are better than hens or visa versa its just that the cocks , when racing w.hood need as much rest and quiet, during the day,,,, i used to have a camera in the loft and a small tv in the kitchen, and could see these cocks anytime, most of the time they lay down in perfect peace,, when i got the odd cock giving bother, out he came .but he was used at a later stage as well,,,,, problem i found with roundabout was hens laying. you never new when
  23. most of your questions, youve more or less answered yourself. one thing to remember is pigeons hate cold east winds most of the strays found at my loft in cold april are iether late breds or yearlings. isee them every year, these pigeons are finished for the year. i used to start my yearlings middle of may approx [depending on the weather] youll get the benefit from them then your getting there speedbird wish you all the best p.s peds. will be in post next week jimmy
  24. still no luck has anyone else?
  25. your quite right bruno , i remember that myself now, it was the ddt, that kicked it off , but that was right during the war these pigeons saved many lives. i will make no further coments on the game keepers and about the food that determines the numbers????? i also see your point on rspb playing god and STILL providing nest sites and food supplies to them, EACH year to get new ones established, but theve been doing that for years now, there are plenty great great gandchildren WELL established, and wild, AND BREEDING, my beleive is, apart from the avian flu threat, there will be little or no racing in 20 years time due to the hawk population, pigeon racing is declining at a very fast rate, most fanciers that are bothered with hawks on a daily basis are just calling it a day, and who can blame them .
