  1. well done to all who raced , congrats. to r m seaton the winner and congrats. to the section winners [well done homer ]
  2. steal a pair of tights,,,,but dont get caught ;D,, but this can be used as a hammock with the bird unable to move its wings, and the two broken legs hanging through 2 holes in the tights,if its a yb itll be ok in a fortnight, to get around,,,,off course you would need to feed and water it this way, best of luck with it,
  3. i agree , leave the bird to eat itself , if it doesnt after a day or two , theres something wrong with it , if it goes" backwards" then dispose of it
  4. squeeze whats in the crop out ,,or work it out with massaging its crop , dilute some milton , syrynge it down, filling the crop then after 10 mins squeeze out again , then put some milton in the drinker for a few days [in other words bathe the birds crop out with diluted milton]
  5. i think sammy has a point here , when you look at a field of wheat for instance, nowadays, the stem is far shorter and the ears are far bigger, thus providing more wheat [or more money] the grain is certainly not the quality we had years ago, off course theres good years and bad years for growing it, and theres years where the grain contains more moisture than others , i beleive its like the battery hens ,laying yukky weak eggs compared to free range hens,,its mass produced for more money,,,thats the way of the world now

  9. i think this is one of the great wonders of the homing pigeon, truly fascinating, i beleive in these 4 pointers and in the other posts , but think there are many more factors, whatever the factors are ,the fitter and healthier , the pigeon [and the love of home ,contentment etc] are are paramount to sharpen up these factors, but a truly fascinating subject :)jimmy] sorry cs,put my post on yours, then altered it to quote your post on my own
  10. sir colin scored from snfc sartilly 505 mile then on to win 2cnd open nantes608 miles approx 4 weeks later,,,,,,,he had a couple of yeast tabs down his throat every day or so,, this was yeast tabs,,,,,not yeast vite ,this is bad as it contains caffiene
  11. i have used electrolytes or reheydration salts in the past, tried it in one section ,,,the other section just plain water ,,,after a 350 mile race ,,,the ones that had the electrolytes or reheydration salts ,,,droppings back to normal sooner
  12. i have actualy found that the bird heals quicker if left and not splinted [ i,e yb,s] they soon learn to hop on one leg and feed ok and are ok in a fortnight, if splinted , you run the risk of the leg swelling and more damage done , but if expertly done , i would take the splint off in a week,[again yb,s the bones knit quicker than ob,s]
  13. great stuff , excellant article
  14. birds looking fantastic bill, ill say it again what a fantastic job your doing, great reports , up to date info, pics etc,,,,,well done
  15. i agree bart ,,if you go back in the posts , youll see the carry on we had with them [the rspb i mean] if there were a pair of eagle owls nesting [they nest in the same habitat as perigrines] in most quarries etc , there would be less perigrines , an eagle owl will feed mainly on rabits, but will swoop on a roosting perigrine and finish it off, it will not tolerate a perigrine near its nesting place.
  16. i would do the same, this way , if done properly ,gives you the yb nat , and the birds will moult all flights.
  17. great flying by all, ,,,i seem to remember a m,cleod, doing well last year as well
  18. this is a habit which is very difficult to get rid of,usualy learned by old birds [ or birds in the feild] only thing i can suggest is allways have a handfull of conditioner on the loft roof b4 landing , but when they start training from ,A to B then in ,they should overcome that problem then ,[some good tips on previous posts ]
  19. congrats to the mitchels,, sounds as though a very good race with the winners spread out like that ,, good luck to all who timed
  20. personally iwould stop them , 8, 2 year olds ,that have flown 252 miles can do a lot of damage as 2 y,olds, you dont say whether you race w, hood or natural, i would be more inclined to look at why you dropped them , maybe paired too early on natural theyd be on their 4th flight , this is when the body feathers begin to loosen ready for a body moult, or if w, hood ,were they trained to much to early, march ?could be many reasons ,but i would seek that one out, but as i say , as youve no older birds ,would tend to keep the 8 for two year olds , good luck ,whichever way you decide
  21. thers paulo for a start ,,,,,go for it paul ;D
  22. as we know craig has a dissability ,being deaf and having arthritic probs [a s] i think this would be a great thing for him to do ,also good for the forum members , trouble is , all the good ones are shy ;D ;D ;D,, but im sure hell get this moving and hope we get some forum members loft reports

my own thoughts are ,,,buying a kit of healthy ybs for around £100 cant be bad at all ,,,it would nearly cost you that to rear them, you can pay fortunes for pigeons that never breed anything, as said b4 you pays your money, and take your chance ,,,,,,,,,,but,,most fanciers tend to blame the pigeons and never themselves ?
