  1. the bird in the above post is in fact " ruhr express" awarded the dicken medal , sold for a world record price for a cock pigeon by the R,A,F to s and d bishop of weybridge the world record price,,,,,,,,£420
  2. always interesting,, here is a pic of the world record priced pigeon,, way back then
  3. this is an old thread,,from many years ago, please note p,b rules,,,,,,,,,,,, , [members should not" dig uo" an old thread, unless you have something worthwhile to post in it" thread locked there have been many threads on condies crystals since this original thread,,,, please feel free to start a new one, in the proper section,, thank you
  4. a balanced diet will keep a bird healthy, but as said b4 in past posts, there are many fanciers change their feeding to suit,, i,e the seasons, the racings and the showing etc,, pigeons are naturally clever feeders, they will eat what they need , at the time they need it,, i,e when feeding youngsters they will push the maize [carboheydrates to the side and eat the protein [legumes] peas/beans etc, this will come natural to them,, the problem lies in feeding for the different races,, as off course they dont know their going to a race, or the endurance needed for the particular race, so my opinion must be fed accordingly,, many fanciers have many different ideas on this, in my opinion, they need extra protein when moulting, or when feeding youngsters, also plenty grit minerals and vits, etc,, the growth rate of a young pigeon is so great i,e from the newly hatched egg to a 4 week old pigeon that is fully feathered and almost flying,,,,,, again in my opinion, the first three weeks of a pigeons life is the most important thing of all, the adults will eat mostly protein foods [and a little of what they fancy] just to feed these fast growing youngsters, my tip for what its worth, is adding babies milk powder, a couple of tablespoons to a full drinker maybe just a smile ;D [i do sometimes do this ;D] i read that the first three minutes of our own lives are the most important,,,, ;D then it occurred to me ;D ;D ;D that the LAST three minutes are nothing to write home about either ;D ;D ;D,, good luck ;D
  5. nice dry straw the birds love, but would beware as the above post says, the mould from damp straw can cause severe health probs [aspergiliosis] , if used, better to renew regular [maybe not at that price above ;D ;D,,, by the sound of it anyway ;D ;D], but better kept dry and fresh
  6. hi jacoba., in my opinion , to keep just one bird , will have its difficulties,, pigeons are naturally gregarious,, [need company],, having a few would settle them better, keep them happier , and would make it easier to train them to work as a team, i,e letting them out/getting them in etc, the bird it has brought back will probably be a mate for it, ,, if you just keep them as a hobby, there would be no harm in this, but if you intend racing them, , maybe best get in touch with any local fancier, who would help/advise good luck
  7. welcome to the site in my opinion in starting racing pigeons, is befriend some of your best fliers around you, most are very decent and will help/advise any new starter,,, a good apprentice will soon learn from a good tradesman ,, a good look through the many pages of pigeon basics , will learn you a lot,, good luck
  8. this will depend on many circumstances, i,e strains, etc,,,,, ive noticed longevity more , in distance type racing pigeons , i have had birds 22 years old , at the moment have a hen sitting fertile eggs at 12 years old, would say the average age would be about 16 years old
  9. pm sent ;D
  10. the reason i ask this, if it is salmonella/paratyphoid, i would assume, through past experience, that many eggs would not hatch,, then, after this, yb,s would die being just a few days old ,,,, if all yb,s hatched, i would think it less likely to be salmonella/paratyphoid, but would def get this ruled out by a good avian vet,, this off course is looking at the worst scenario,,,,, it could well be as the other posts suggest,,, i certainly hope it is the latter, as it would far easier put right,, good luck in your findings and certainly hope you get to the bottom of this
  11. can i ask you ron,,, did most of your yb,s hatch?? i,e any" dead in the shell"?
  12. sad news yet again,, r,i,p, rab

  16. much the same here in the lothians,, overcast , misty and very damp,,,, but looking on the good side ;D,, we can now notice the nights getting lighter now
  17. hope you dont mind me moving this post,, as it will be longer on this section than the main notice board,,, as , on the notice board it will soon disappear through the realms of the pages, wish you luck in your finding,, you can always put a reminder on later to bring it back to the top,,good luck

  19. in my opinion, there,s for,s and against here,, as the back posts suggest , but a cock that has reared yb,s on the floor can take over the floor after this,, this could be used in the motivation game , if worked on very carefully, , but could proove stressfull for other birds in the loft,, the one thing to watch for is when the parents are driving for the second nest,, the yb,s on the floor could well be damaged ,, by other cocks,,, i would put a small box down with nest pan in,, off the floor slightly,,making sure they cant nest underneath it,,,the cock should perch, on top of this box ,, off course the box could be turned when not in use, then turned round again when needed for motivation
  20. great to see your three birds still there,, best of luck,,
  21. many thanks to the many p,b members , for their kind support i have received literally hundreds of e mails, pm,s phone calls,, etc, and will personally thank each and every one of you, in due course, at the moment my time is being taken up, on jury service, but a preliminary sincere, and heartfelt thanks to all, concerned.
  22. i leave whats in the nest pan, but lift the nest pan each day, then scrape the base of the nest box, spray lightly with virkon s . the clay nest pans have air holes in the bottom, i have found these air holes completely useless , as theres a rim around the base rendering these air holes useless!! by placing the nest pan on a small folded wire grill, or a couple of slats of wood,, keeps the nest pan slightly above the floor of the nest box , allowing the air to circulate , and eliminate the damp patch under the nest pan ,especialy when theres big yb,s in the nest
