Seen that with chickens (soft shell) before it hardens. An old fancier once told me, for yearling hens (or any) mix olive oil in the feed two or three days before she lays helps the passage of the egg also ensure birds have plenty calcium as this is required by the muscles to push the egg on its way it all goes to make egg laying easier.

Got that straight from the vet a number of years ago when i took the dog to get a check up she had a really bad case of the runs and bleeding I thought he was kidding but told me then it worked on humans,animals and birds just get rid of the gas. Feed till droppings start to firm up and keep on light feed - nothing that's hard to digest.

One of the most common reasons for hens not laying is hens being overweight, and becoming egg bound and sometimes lack of calcium (grit/mineral deficiency) and have you seen the cock treading the hens sometimes other cocks will interfere and the process is not carried properly.
