Twisted And Broken Legs
JohnQuinn replied to Whats it called Cumbernauld's topic in Health & Feeding
Had one with a splayed leg a few years back, i got string and tied a knot in it, to make a loop, the loop was about 2 inches in diameter, then i put it above the knees of both legs, pulling them together. The string stays on because of the splayed leg trying to push back out. The young bird could still use its feet as well, only took about 10 days if memory serves, for the splayed leg to stay in the correct position and the youngster never looked back. -
Best of luck to you, are you hot on any of them?

Sent 3, two 2yr olds 1 hen, 1 ck, and a yearling hen. ;)

Clearly he's no a dooman, maybe he has more interest in the sparrow hawk survival than the pigeon's! Takes all sorts!! As we already know from the likes of the RSPB, there are those who have little regard for the survival of birds of any kind being preyed on. Unless of course its a bird of prey, then they lock you up for protecting your stock. Or get rid of anything that would kill them

That'll have been mine Sapper, completely went out my head at the time when i should have posted it off to Ian, its in the post at 8.45am today so should get there tomorrow OR Saturday morning at the very latest, head like a sieve at times, so i have!!

lots of myths about hawks not killing/entering water with their prey, its quite clear they are very intelligent birds. The only answer to them in my opinion, is to have something preying on them, that is on their case all the time and needs to kill them to preserve their own self. Just can't see the human efforts making an impact on there numbers. jmo

YOUR GETTING THE BEST ADVICE AVAILABLE, PARTICULARLY REGARDING REMOVING THE OLD CK'S UNTIL THE YOUNG CK'S SETTLE IN THE SECTION AND THEIR NEW BOX. THE CK'S GROW TO LOVE THE BOX THEY RACE TO, AND THIS IS PART OF THE MOTIVATION FOR THEM RACING, HOWEVER IT DOES NOT FOLLOW THAT IF THEY HAVE 2 BOXES THEY WILL RACE BETTER, THE EXTRA WORK ASSOCIATED WITH DEFENDING A SECOND BOX CAN, IN THEORY AT LEAST, TIRE THE CK OUT LEAVING HIM A LITTLE JADED ON RACE DAYS AND UNABLE TO PERFORM AT HIS BEST. If you get it early you'll no have needed 2 anyway, very best o luck with it. Ma 4 are now 3, no got any subs ready to take the wee hens place. Two 2yr olds and a yearling hen. They were ma first 3 doos out of Bovingdon, so i'm cautiously optimistic of a decent race.
-
Cheers Jim for takin an interest, ma all pooler in the fed is ok so i'm still smiling, hope i can still smile after the race!! :D Many are you going with yourself?
-
Aye 100% Jim. When i got in fae work the first thing i done was check the 3 hens were there, as it was ma mam that let thyem in on their return today. They were all in the loft and nothing looked out of place. She went out with the rest when i opened up but never came back in, say 6pm time. I went back up to look for a stray young bird 8pm and she appeared in the sky above me then landed on the roof, i knew it was her right awy and sure enough trhe ck is on the nest (1 day yb) and she wasn't in. its her alright. The only half logical thing to me is that she picked something in the basket this morning but she looked branned new when i went in to check on them. I'm flummoxed by her behaviour. When she first landed she was standing proud on the point of the roof, then hunched up after about 5 mins, but why fly away again??? I've wrote ma pool sheets out after i let them out, with her on it.
-
Tossed 3 hens this morn on the van, all 3 gleaming, home ok. Tonight one of the hens has stayed out and was sitting hunched up on a nearby roof, ma doos don't land on roofs! anyway no amount of coaxing brought her down to the loft. About 20 mins later she had vanished and haven't seen her since Any logical idea's about this behaviour??? Normally this hen is invisible in the loft, never notice her as she is always content in herself!

Buying (Somewhat) Proven Birds From Europe
JohnQuinn replied to chrisbonnie's topic in Ideas & Theories
My advice to your father is to buy at home, he won't get BETTER birds because they are from a certain country, or for that matter from better fanciers. Go to the top man in your own area and spend your money there. You have the advantage right away of knowing the stock you buy already perform and/or produces pigeons to perform at the top of the result sheet in Ireland. I'm sure the opportunity to buy foreign will come to him in time, for example Martha Van Geel came from Holland to sell pigeons here in Lanarkshire, i'm sure they must visit Ireland too. ;) -
Has anyone else noticed there is not a single yearling on the result? Also the number of 4yrs+ birds timed in is very high! What do you's make of that.
-
Was doing a verification yerterday ant the fanciers wife keeps some fancy pigeons, she fancies a wee go at the shows but i was unable to give her any info on, anyone know of how to find out about it, ?? Even if there is a magazine she could order at the news agents.
