dehydration is the biggest cause of losses especially young birds as if there is to many in baskets/crates some birds are unable to get to drinkers then you here pigeon men on a Saturday moaning about the pigeons diving into the drinkers I know from convoying pigeons what like it is when you see pigeons trying to get to the drinkers but cant because there were to many pigeons in baskets

But still Peter, it will continue as some of the folk at the top haven't a clue about pigeons in general, they just like politics and holding officialdom. They don't recognise where we are failing our pigeons. Have you ever heard fanciers say '' the 3rd yb race is always a disaster'' or '' that's a bad racepoint, im not sending'' these are things that should be addressed!! Why is the 3rd race a disaster, why are racepoints supposedly bad? Its all in our hands to sort these things but still, we carry on as before.I was going off topic a bit there but it maybe all relevant to too many birds in the basket!!

I agree with most that has been said ,but surely we as the fanciers call the

Shots, and say how many birds should be in the boxes / crates ???

Problem is most fanciers are just not interested in what happens they "just want to race there doos"

Excuses are easier to find than answers until it comes to cost or losses them we hear them squeal :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

Aye we do call the shots Willie, but we seem to make seriously bad decisions on this because we are persuaded by manufacturers that crates can take x amount of birds when in fact, this is not true.

All this stuff about space for pigeons is interesting and valid. However the position is that too many fanciers want half trained or untrained young birds away to races and loudly claim that they have paid their dues and it is the responsibility of the conveying organisation to cater to them.I apologise to genuine and caring pigeon fanciers reading this but I only relate what I have seen and I will certainly not send my birds to the first three young bird races and indeed might not bother with young bird racing.

with the way this sport is going shortly you wont have to worry about how many birds there is in a crate,

you will be wondering how to fill them,,

I can hardly believe what I am reading here regarding what the RPRA recommend Are you aware that 44 sq ins = 6.1/2 ins.. 52 sq ins = 7.1/4 ins and 60 sq ins = 7.3/4 ins.. Most pigeons are between 8-10 ins from head to tail and could not turn round in that space.

There is a difference between inch squared and square inches. 60 sq in could be 6" x 10". Nevertheless, using these parameters as guidelines, ANRF are overpopulating their crates very slightly, even though to the eye the pigeons have plenty of room.

Referring to other comments in regard to water availability, ANRF have 34 points of water access and I feel this has made a great difference to the condition of our pigeons.

We were putting 22 pigeons in a crate, but will reduce it to 19 maximum. :)

Seems to be going that way, another top Dublin fancier and friend has taken the decision that this will be his last year with the birds :(

Good post Del, agree with everything you've said.

I dont understand some fanciers lodgic. Why dont they understand that less is more.

What i mean to say is less birds in the basket would benifit them as well as everyone else! A win win situation surley.

Ive heard people say their crates can take 28 birds no problem BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER SAYS SO!! This is commercialism and these people are only saying this to give their transporters they are selling to you more capacity and make them more appealing. Im 40+ years in this game and at no time have I ever looked in a basket/crate with 28 pigeons in and said, the pigeons look so relaxed and content. Get a grip folks, think of the pigeons and nothing more and the successful seasons will come. The other thing nowadays with Y.B.S rife,is for the first 3 races everyone should have their own crate/s. This stops cross infection and also lowers the stress on the ybs as they recognise their loft mates in the crate with them. If you have your own crate then both cocks and hens can go in there with no problems. Pigeonmen are daft at times , we create a lot of problems for ourselves.

good point Derick i'm going to suggest this to our members for this season

I just witnessed a guy at the national marking put birds in the baskets without marking the counter up, expletive remove I checked him after he did it for the 3rd time, *expletive removed* unreal.

Are crates a standard size??

I race in the NIPA and my club wouldn't have more than 20 birds in a crate

Soupie

Our baskets are 36"x36" but have seen some a lot smaller.
