ive a pair of eggs that didnt hatch from 1 stock pair ? they were sat for 20 days , they are a new pairing . ive broken the eggs to reveal them a weak yellow inside , no blood, or evidence of a chick forming at all. whats your opinion on why ??

There could be many reasons but it seems they were infertile.

That can often happen with a new pairs .

Weak yellow I don't know anything about but some multi it's might help with yolk colour!

Sounds to me like the eggs were infertile Andy, hopefully you'll have better luck in the next nest :smiling-scarecrow-329:

when all my stock were prisoners i had a pair this was happenning with, after 3 blind rounds i put them in an empty end for a couple of hours each day and then let them back through and the next round were full.think he was a bit shy at treading her in front of the rest, lol.always seemed to just hang about the nest.

Why have they been sat for 20 days empty Andrew? ? Tut tut. Maximise production lol

i kept thinking i had noted the laying date wrong . i never check them (candle them) ?

many things can cause this andy being bullied is no one not getting piece to tread because of a dominant cock or hen taking to long to lay and cock gets fed up and has not tread her on the day or days she is most fertile

i have the old 20 year old direct son of de barcelona and lady wegan in the empty latebred section as his legs are so stiff he can hardly walk he was looking a bit sorry for him self so two weeks ago i put his greatgrandaugter in beside him to keep him company and must say he picked up a bit the hen is a latebred carrying five nest flights could not believe when i went to feed them this morning they have an egg not expecting them to be full but might try the artificial insemination again the one i got by doing this last year turned out a cracking young cock now called semi lol

i am guessing from the answers and knowing this pair, the cock is a little timid and the hen is from a line where they lay within 5 to 7 days . so it,s looking like he didnt get his chance maybe ?? :emoticon-0127-lipssealed:

if you dont have an empty section you can put them in let them both out on there own for wee half hour before you let the rest out or after you bring the rest of your birds in that will give them the time alone to do the deed and should sort it pal

they are stock birds , there was a spare section that Seona has had me convert for more of her quail so ,,,,, the other one is so full of kids toys and stuff, it will take me a week to clear :emoticon-0136-giggle:

i do have a small section with only 5 in , may stick them in a basket and put them there for a day or 3 ??

all these sections, starting to sound like Massarella,s :emoticon-0136-giggle:

If your worried about the paleness of the yolk give them a source of riboflavin (vit B2) which will enrich the yolk. This vit can be found in brewers yeast amongst other things.

Pale yellow yolk indicates worms and you will know the last time you wormed them.

Aye? Could be a hunner things causing an infertile egg could it no?

When I kept chickens Steve the poultry magazine always referred to worms when it came to pale yolks.

Fair play, when a wee nipper clear eggs wer removed after 5/6 days and gently opened........small circles on the yolk wer looked for as in indicator of fertility.......if present then poor incubation was to blame but if not the cock was deemed a jaffa? Whats yer thoughts on that?

Steve,

I cannot remember having a bad hatch and I certainly dont go breaking open any eggs for examination at any time unless its to give them to the dogs. By pairing up in March all should be well if you have prepaired them for such an important excercise. Perhaps the odd latebred will be a wee bit later laying but that can be expected.

the birds sitting for 20 days keeping them warm will make the yolk paler imo i always check them at 3to 4 days if the blood spider is not there the eggs are empty but ive found in the past few years that if you hold a just layed egg up to a light and you can see a small circle the size of your finger tip they do not hatch i think this is the embryo im seeing and when the egg is fertile the embryo is spread around the inside of the egg shell and you dont see it till the birds have been sitting 3to4 days ive never had one that has hatched when seeing this circle on the fresh egg but having a few very old stock cocks ill pay more attention this year
