greenbar Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 with the nights creeping now,is there any harm in giving the birds an extra hr or so.we have our loft lights on until 7-30, whats your opinion please.
Bryngwynt Lofts Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 I would leave the lights off personally, encourages the birds to moult.Plus for me stops the bloody hens pairing up as well. Also last couple of nights have been a lot colder.

Handy when pairing up and breeding early to give a few extra hours of light to the breeding pairs , I use them at the moment in the morning before going to work to get the birds fed but personally I dont like to put them on at night as it attract the local cats as well as a lot of moths.
Novice Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 Just learn to judge the feed quantity for the entire day and leave it in the morning.I did this for years when I worked 12 hour shifts and, believe me, they never even missed me.

Bryngwynt Lofts Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 Have to say I use my lights more in the morning when feeding the birds around 7am,before going to work. But its a must to use early in the season when pairing up early.

cemetary Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 No lights here, fed in daylight, moulting good, it does help with the aviary though, birds are looking great, more than pleased.
greenbar Posted October 14, 2015 Author Report Posted October 14, 2015 thanks for your oppinions guys,
Wiley Posted October 14, 2015 Report Posted October 14, 2015 You must make the birds feel it is autumn/ winter time, so they should shed there feathers, this is all done by the hours of light. Too much hours of light and the birds think its spring/summer and they wont moult. Hence why thr darkness system works so well as we trick the youngsters it is autumn/winter so they must moult. And the yb specialists after coming of the dark extend the daylight in the loft so the birds do not moult come the big races in September, when the natural light is getting less.
Roland Posted October 14, 2015 Report Posted October 14, 2015 Wiley quite rightly states '.... is all done by the hours of light'. It is 100% correct. Like the trees they note the lessening of day light to drop leaves etc. (Autumn). Hours of light, not darkness is the deciding factor. But I feel one must be careful when tampering with nature personally.
