I fancy wintering my hens in the aviary all winter I know some do this down south but does anyone do it up here (scotland)? I know our winters can be a bit worse with driving rain etc so unsure....the aviary has 3 sides and a clear roof with the floor grilled and the one remaining side open so it's not totally out in the elements

Have read somewhere that a few of the old continental flyers used to have their doos in the aviary all winter . They said it was good for respiratory . But it would be a lot warmer over there!!

Youll find out the right ones if you do it Geo, I wouldn't hesitate.

No for me. Shut them up, keep them warm, get them a bath and let the feathers come out. Before ye know it it will be December and you won't have to defrost them before mating lol

i did it one year with my stock cocks just for somewhere to split them they had a good moult but found they were a bit dull in the feather compaired to the birds kept inside but after a week back inside the shine was back on them kept my stock latebreds out all season this year wire roof and walls but for one side again dull of feather but hardy buggers now
