In your own opinion guys were do you think the future off the sport lies?

What type of racing will we be doing etc?

somewhere along the lines of a few guy,s keeping a few at home , occasionally getting the fancy idea if they breed some they can race them. stick some old rings on them ,arranging a lift with a family member or tradesman prepared to take a basket and let them go .maybe as many as 3 or 4 pals getting together ,sending 3 or 4 each ,first home wins .re-read this post in around 20 years George ,if I am far wrong , I will buy you a drink :emoticon-0167-beer:

im afraid no one knows the future of our sport george we could listen to the doom and gloom merchants who say its finnished and they maybe right but i say enjoy it while we still have it to enjoy and take each year as it comes m8 clubs feds and nationals will be forced to come together to survive and there is very little young blood like yourself coming through to keep our sport alive young guys now are just not interested in pigeons im afraid kids are into different things nowdays and pigeons are not one of them ive tried to get local kids involved in pigeons grandkids to but when they see the work involved they dont want to know and who can blame them so worry about today not what might happen tomorrow imo

Hope the future is bright cause iv just joined a club for the first time, but in my honest oppinion i fear the worst as there just isnt enough young people interested in racing pigeons, plus some of the older guys seem to be stuck in a time warp, jmo and hope i dont offend anyone.

For me I believe you will sadly see distance racing getting less and less birdage and sprinting and middle distance being more the done thing (if its not already that way)

This is a perfect description of how it all started, "going full circle"

Interesting topic... I think once people keep pigeons or spend time around them (be it with a father/grandfather) or similar it often is in their blood and never leaves. For example I raced with my late Father for a few years back in the early 90's when I was a young lad. I have only recently started building my first loft and had the resources (settled home etc) which meant I could even consider getting involved again. But make no mistake, even without physical contact with any pigeons or pigeon fanciers the passion never left. From that perspective, I would say the problem these days is not enough young people are exposed to pigeon racing or even keeping pigeons as pets. Without getting exposed to the wonderful hobby/sport there is sadly no chance of them ever coming into contact with a pigeon except from what they see lurking about in the High Street eating scraps which of course isn't so appealing.

I would say another big problem is the growing number of people living in flats or houses with tiny (or no garden). Especially in the built up areas this is a massive barrier to entry which makes setting up a loft impossible. The average age for 1st time home buyers in the UK is like 30-35 now (from memory) where once upon a time people could easily get a home as young men in their early 20’s. People renting from Landlords aren’t usually allowed to build even a storage shed without permission let alone a pigeon loft. Also council tenants’ often get a bum deal too with planning permission and silly rules and regulations being enforced.

Another thing that will of course make a difference is the multiculturalism/change in ethnic makeup of the UK. Interestingly a lot of the people I see keeping pigeons in London are Indian & Pakistani or Turkish guy's who love their fancy pigeons and many have little lofts in their gardens usually with Tippler or Fantails or similar. Pigeon keeping seems to be doing much better in Asian countries and in India (not sure about the racing element but certainly keeping as a hobby aspect) so the change of the makeup of the population in the UK will probably have an impact (I could actually see them boosting the sport massively).

30 years ago a prophecy I uttered was that mobile phones would be the future, Computers would take over the world and Pigeons would clock themselves in with a chip ring. I was told I was talking sh$$e. Another prophecy I uttered was the future of pigeon racing lay with all the birds being issued with a chip that would be scanned by satellite and displayed on a screen within the club house and rather birds racing to a home loft their would be an imagery line where the first bird to cross would be the winner. Speaking lately about this possibility it was suggested that in a 200 mile race it could be run as the first bird over the 50 mile line then the same again at 100, 150, 200 miles giving 4 races and an opportunity to have pools on each segment. This idea could in theory be taken up by the National Bookmaker's and shown live in their shops for the punters to have a flutter. Never say Never..

Ladbrokes did have something along these lines back in 2004 whereby some Albatross were electronically tagged during migration across the Southern Ocean. Bets were taken I believe on which bird would arrive first and the media loved it. Bookies will bet on anything and this sort of market would offer something completley different, could totally happen someday.
